Additional Comments
i don't know if it's only my problem or it's a problem of Wine 1.1.5
You need a Wine version >0.9.48 in order to install the game without the j2re environment
Launch winecfg and choose XP as Windows version.
Move to the CD directory and run the installer
wine setup.exe
Follow the instructions.
Running and Playing Football Manager 2008
Launch winecfg and choose Vista as Windows version.
Replace the original fm.exe file with the no-cd version (fm.exe file is located in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2008/fm.exe by default). The no-cd file is available on dedicated websites, do not ask here please...
Move to FM directory (~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2008 by default)
How I got it working.
by BB on Thursday May 8th 2008, 8:37
First, it wouldn't install with 0.9.55.
So I downgraded to 0.9.49.
I already had Jave JRE installed (I think you need it to do the setup).
I then successfully installed it (wine setup.exe). I think the install actually crashed in the end - not sure (I left the room and when I returned it wasn't running).
I then installed the 8.02 patch.
I don't know if the game would run with 0.9.49 - I made a mistake and thought it wouldn't, so I upgraded to 0.9.55.
When I tried running it, it gave a lot of errors, including that it couldn't show full screen and/or couldn't convert from 32 to 16 bpp. So I had to go to my xorg.conf (usually at /etc/xorg.conf), and disable both Composite and AIGLX.
# For Football Manager 2008. Otherwise it should be enabled!
# Option "Composite" "Enable"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
(and elsewhere in the file:)
# For Football Manager 2008. Otherwise it should be true!
# Option "AIGLX" "true"
Option "AIGLX" "off"
Important note! A number of people have had to do this, but their symptoms were different from mine (they got to the credits, etc). So if something isn't working, try the above anyway.
I tried playing it with Wine set up for XP emulation (via winecfg). It just hanged after the opening credits. So I switched to Vista. Works now - with a minor bugs: If I press Alt-Tab or do anything to switch to a Linux window, the game crashes.
I tried going into winecfg and disabling the option where you allow the Linux WM to control the window. But then it would just show the credits and crash.
I think that's about it. Played some matches and no problems.
Crashing after splash screen SOLUTION!
by pir4 on Tuesday May 6th 2008, 7:06
If your FM2008 is crashing on the splash screen after you can successfully launched it with wine, then you just need to add the following lines to you /etc/X11/xorg.conf to make it work like it should:
