I'm installing and patching the game on the Windows machine, then try to run it under wine on mounted NTFS - game runs perfectly.
Then i'l copy game directory and some game files from "Documents and Settings" to clean wineprefix.

WARNING! If you game runs out of the box, DO NOT INSTALL nothing through winetricks AND DO NOT regedit!

After copy UT3 from Windows machine to clean wineprefix, i get follow the "How To", and i have seriosly lags of gameplay, and game stay allmost unplayable even on normal settings detail of graphics..
Then i create new wineprefix, copy again game and files, and UT3 runs smoothly and perfectly without any action with winetricks or regedit on high detail of graphics..

Sugestions about Test result submit

This notes was updated: January, 5 - 2013

First of all, thank you for spending some time to help Wine to get better,

I would like to make some suggestions for you to make your tests results more relevant to other users of Wine.
  • Detail your PC specs in the Extra Coments section (e.g. your video card, processor, and system memory).
  • It's also important to specify your video card driver version into Extra Comments section.
  • Specify if you installed the game into a fresh Wineprefix (or not), and what programs you actually installed.
  • Detail what version of the Windows emulation you use in your Wineprefix (e.g. Windows XP, 7, etc).
  • Add a comment about what is not working - be specific not vague!!
  • Specify if you made any changes to your game e.g. like a games "Mod", an .exe patch or details of any modification you made to the stock configuration files from the game.

These are recommendations to make tests result more uniform and targeted to include common information that will be useful to other users of Wine.


 
How-To Install the game.

You need:

  • A recent version of wine, it's recomended the last release
  • A video card with 3D Acceleration suport on your unix.
  • The 3D driver installed for that card.
  • It's not necessary a clean prefix, but it's recomended.
  • Steam installed and running, to do that, follow the steps on Steam page.

Installing:

Just install your game like other normal game installed on Steam, it's not necessary any patch or program. For more detail how to boost your games see the section Tips below.

Tips:

For make Unreal Tournament 3 run better and without any problem, install Visual C Runtime libraries, to do that, download here and here and install-it.

After installing, create a file called vcrun.reg and put the following content:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\DllOverrides]
"msvcr80"="native,builtin"
"msvcr90"="native,builtin"

Then run the follow command:

env WINEDEBUG="fixme-all" WINEPREFIX="(your-prefix)" wine regedit ./vcrun.reg

Now install your game like other normal software installed on wine. Then install the Unreal Tournament 3 Patch v2.1, download here and install into your prefix.

Then just run the game and everything should work fine.

Troubleshooting
Unreal Tournament crash on start-up, don't open.

This bug normally happens because of the Visual C Runtime, see the Tips section for more information.

Unreal Tournament 3 Laggy, slow:

This happens in alot of games if you dont set the size of RAM that you VideoCard has, use this registry key to set:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"VideoMemorySize"="768"

Change the 768 to the real ammount of RAM in MB that your VideoCard has.

Unreal Tournament 3 Hangs on start and crash (only Steam version).

This bug is related to Steam in-game overlay, to solve, add a entry on winecfg libaries section called gameoverlayrenderer and set to disabled.

 
Old Problems.

Note: These problems don't affect the newest versions of wine, it's only here for precaution, if you have any of these bug's maybe you should upgrade your wine version.

Mouse stuck into the edges of screen, cant turn 360º

This happens because the Mouse Input of wine is not so good until now, you can solve adding this patch to registry:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\DirectInput]
"MouseWarpOverride"="force"

The Mouse will not work into the menu, you gonna have to use the keyboard to walk into the Unreal menus.

Mouse is showing in the screen while playing (Only steam version).

This bug only happens with the Steam version, all the games into steam has this problem with old versions of wine/steam.

Mouse randomly jumps around menu or in game.

This is caused by implementation of mouse input in old versions of wine, to solve-it, you need to run the game in Windowed mode or into a Virtual Desktop.

UT3 Logo hangs indefinitely using 100% of cpu.

You can solve this problem by using the options -nomoviestartup and -onethread in the game executable. Newest version of wine don't have this bug.

Version Patch 2.1 Multiplayer Not Working

Install worked perfectly. Installed the "Patch 5" to version 2.1. Multiplayer servers give message "Connection failed. An updated version of Unreal Tournament 3 is required." What gives?

UT3 & Wine 1.5.12

I downloaded the Unreal Tournament 3 patch and followed the Winetricks instructions.
UT3 runs perfectly!
I've had no issues mentioned above.

Mint 13 32-bit
GeForce 550 Ti
Wine 1.5.12

The only problems I am having is running mods for Unreal Tournament 3.
I can install mods, but launching them has proven difficult because UT3 can not find the mod folders in Documents/My Games

I'm not sure if this is an issue with Lion, but it will show a Unreal Tournament 3 picture then goes black. The only way to get out is to hit
command+q

Won't run

Everything installed properly, and I added the registry keys this site says to add, but the program will not run. It gives me no error messages. A tab pops up in the toolbar saying "Starting UT3" (or something along those lines) and then it goes away and nothing happens. I'm not 100% positive I have the keys entered correctly, if someone could post a screenshot of what it should look liek that would be helpful.

Moving mouse in ut3

Tried to boot up ut3 in Ubuntu 10.04, and was pleasantly surprised to find that everything worked perfectly when it wouldn't get past the splash screen pre-10.04.

One strange problem however; during gameplay the mouse won't move beyond 100 degrees or so either way, so I essentially can't turn around.

It's been fun trying to play without being able to turn around, but any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Performance is improved since wine 1.1.30 Mouse is a showstopper bug. You can't use cards which are unlockable powerups because when you use the keyboard to navigate and use a card it then loses focus and can't navigate to the play match button in the menu. So your choice is powerups or a working mouse ingame. It's no choice at all.

This game plays pretty horrible on Linux saddly. Runs flawless on my windows boot. I get wierd changes in my mouse sensitivity it seems. I have the FPS display on so I can see if it drops when my mouse lags but it doesn't, randomly during play my sensitivity gets cut in half so when I go to spin around I only end up going about half way and of course most of the time resutls in my death. I have to play the game on just about the very lowest settings possible though to even get above 40 FPS. I average 60 unless lots of guys are in the same room shooting drops to about 40.

Any ideas on the mouse issue?

Doesn't Open?

I've just installed a fresh version of wine(1.1.31) and created a fresh prefix. I installed UT3(Non-Steam) and attempted to open it. I get through all of the opening movies, and then it freezes at a black screen. It gives me this just before it fails.

MouseWarpOverride ...

Unreal Tournament 3 works perfectly under Wine 1.1.28 in Sabayon 5.0 ( so the latest Gentoo release should too ) except, when I set MouseWarpOverride to 'force' there is no way to select 'Begin Mission' in Campaign mode!

Is there a way to select it just by using the keyboard?

Other than that, without MouseWarpOverride I get quite high FPS with my Phenom II 955 @ 3.2 GHz, Geforce GTX 295 and 6 GB of RAM. :)

sound problem since 1.1.30

can anyone confirm that in menu/ingame sound is broken with 1.1.30? The intro video sound works, but as soon as the menu loads where you have to log in, it's silent.
I have the steam version, but i guess that doesn't make a difference..

Forget about single core processors

Hi all!

My english is in development, plz forgive me that :)
I've bought a whole new pc more than a year ago to play ut3 but still no ut3 for linux so i'm checking this page and ut3 faq very often. i really wanna play by now :\ Few days ago i saw Milena's test results and i got really excited. "Everything works" ooh man sounds good, after a long wait maybe we can play? I've compiled a fresh wine-1.1.29 and installed an ut3 (again). Everything went normal, installation worked. After starting the game i've experienced the same horrible performance as few months ago. It was unplayable even with lowest graphical settings. There's a discussion in the PhysX topic about that maybe PhysX is not hardware accelerated under wine (or linux). I had a single core 3g pentium processor with 2mb L2 cache. Because of Hyperthreading, my cpu load applet looked like i had two processors. While i was testing the game i saw load on BOTH logical processors. I don't think its another process thread of ut3 (but can be possible) maybe its wine, i didn't really care. Milena has an NVIDIA 9800 (i have a 9600) and an amd QUAD processor. Hmmmm... So next day i went to the shop. I've left a lots of money (and tears) there for a 3,2G core2 duo with 6MB L2 cache. Guess what? The performance is PERFECT. I haven't tried maximum graphical settings yet (world and texture detail: 3), but i'm sure it would work. I hope you can use this information.

I still have a serious problem and that is the mouse. Without the MouseWrapOverride reg key the mouse movements are ok until it reaches the edge of the screen of course. When i change the key to "force" the mouse starts to behave really strange. It feels like "dynamic" mouse sensitivity. It FEELS like sensitivity would change in every 2-3 sec. Totally useless, you cant aim (screen edges are ok). Do you guys have any idea how could i fix this?

PhysX

I just realized that Unreal Tournament 3 uses PhysX (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhysX) which is not yet supported in Linux. So, if you for example try to run the PhysX test applications in Wine, they will work, but drop to Software rendering mode (and gives an error stating that no PhysX card was found, no support, remember?), thus making me draw the conclusion that the game does this as well, thus the lag.

Game installs and runs with wine 1.0 rc5 and the registrysetting, but performance is very bad. FPS between 1 and 30 on my athlon 6000+, 2GB and 8800GT. some minor graphicbugs (cant see no weaponfire etc). MouseBug still there

Mouse Problems

On Ubuntu 8.04 with wine1.0 rc5 and after the fixes in regedit i can run the game fine, the only problem is I am not able to move the mouse once i get in the game. Other than that it runs well, no lagging or anything.

Performance/Graphics issues

Performance:
I don't have that of a big problem with the "performance" of the game. I haven't tested the FPS, but, it is definitely higher than 30fps on my GeForce 7600.

Graphics glitches:
The Graphics glitches you see, if you have a nvidia card, is most likely due to a bug in the nvidia driver and not a problem with the game. I do not know the reason in detail, but, I experience the same glitches, but less, in UT2004. It is a known issue it seems, after some searching. Something to do with pixel shaders.

I did not have the same problem before I upgraded from Ubuntu Gutsy to new Hardy. So, it is something with the nvidia driver that have caused the graphics glitches for me. If the driver gets sorted, there will hopefully be a lot less of glitches in UT3.

I sooo wanna play UT3 now. Just finished off UT2004 again :(

I got the game to install and run fine with a clean wine installation.

Set OffScreenRendering mode to fbo
Set UseGLSL to enabled.
Set VideoRAM to 128.

I suffer from very bad performance, but, it is due to my gfx card and not the game, I think.


Could someone with a better GFX card do some testing? I have played it well in Offlinemode, instant action, but very laggy for me.

Try installing with WinXP version.
Fedora had the same problem with Win2000, but WinXP works.

The game minimum system requirements are WinXP SP2 or Vista.
