HOWTO: Install for those with sound issues.
1. Install using this ( liflg.httpdnet.com/files/wine/call.of.duty_1.5-english.run )
Please Note: You may install as root (it will give ALL users access to the same
COD) or as user, giving it to only one user. Saves on multiple
installs.
2. Chmod directory to 0777 (you need write permission for configs).
3. Run winecfg. Ensure "driver emulation" under sound is not
checked. Runs on ALSA or OSS (depending on your setup, I prefer ALSA
but has been reported to work on OSS).
4. It will run as "codmp" or "codsp."
The Loki installer was designed to give WINE last preference. If you wish to edit this, do the following:
Substitute paths and editor as required/desired. The path used is Gentoo but I am told works on other distrobutions as well.
a) nano -w /usr/local/bin/codmp
Line 5 says "WINE_NAMES". The list will be checked sequentially.
Remove WINE from the end, add it to the front. Alternatively, if you
use CVSWINE, add cvswine to the beginning and remove cvswine from its position.
b) nano -w /usr/local/bin/codsp
Same as above
Keep in mind if you do not edit this file it will try Cedega, CVSCedega, Winex3 and CVSWinex and finally Winex before attempting to use WINE.
Since Winex3 and Winex are older software I strongly recommend moving WINE ahead of all of them, with the exception of Cedega if you are that way inclined.
While the issue actually has NOTHING to do with Call of Duty itself, it should be posted.
Some users will get a 507 "insufficient O/S priviliges" error in game. This is generated by "PunkBuster" the software that is aimed at stopping cheats.
For those wondering the same error occurs in Cedega 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 (as well as previous versions). This problem is not isolated to WINE, the same issue appears to occur on 64bit Installations of Windows XP and Mac OS X systems.
Please note: Users with this problem can still play on servers without PunkBuster enabled. It is not an issue with Call of Duty. All errors should be referred to the EvenBalance.com team.
The following comments are owned by whoever posted them. WineHQ is not responsible for what they say.

There is an environment variable that can be set to limit the list of extensions to those present in a given driver version.
Editing the application launch code to include this environment variable cures the buffer overflow on launch, here.
Workaround: In codsp and codmp, change the line
$WINE_EXEC $GAME_BINARY "$@" &&
to
__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 $WINE_EXEC $GAME_BINARY "$@" &&
to limit the extension list to those present in an older (177.00) version of the NVIDIA graphics driver.
Works for me.

start it with:
__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 wine CoDSP.exe
(That first character is a double underscore.)

You should install the latest drivers for your video card, being sure to uninstall the old drivers first. If you already have the latest drivers, you should completely uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them. This fixes most problems. If the game still doesn't work, it may be that your video card does not have the minimum features required. Please check the readme for more information, including a list of supported video cards.
I have Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 so I don't think this should be a problem
Any ideas?

Have at look at:
homepage.hispeed.ch/rscheidegger/dri_experimental/s3tc_index.html
...or just use "driconf" to make your system pretend S3TC ability.

The installation of libtxc-dxtn0 fixed it for me:
For Ubuntu:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn0
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
by BitMaster on Sunday July 7th 2013, 17:04
As a note: I did patch the executable to get around the "buffer overflow" error. Use a hex editor to search for GL_EXTENSIONS (not WGL_EXTENSIONS!) and change %s into %p.

S3 Texture Compression (S3TC / DXTC / DXTn) is needed by many games.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S3_Texture_Compression
It seems to be protected by patent. So they dont include it to the free drivers.
Installing the package made many games work for me.
If you use proprietary drivers from nvidia or ati, you usually dont need to install it.

wine-1.0-rc1
I have CoD downloaded as 2 ISO images
How can I make install go on when it asks to change CD1 to CD2 if the ISOs are mounted in a "hard" folders (/media/iso & /media/iso2, for example)?
"umount" command is not valid. It says "Device Busy"
I suppose I could solve this problem easy burning that ISO images on CDs and using "wine eject" command, but I want to know if it's possible to solve this question doing the first way I said :)

I found this a very useful howto when installing configuring games using Wine:
gaming.gwos.org/doku.php/wine:winestuff
by Erik on Friday March 28th 2008, 19:21
The first issue is that there doesn't seem to be a 'sprint' option in Call of Duty with wine. It just doesn't seem to be there. I don't if it's because it is normally bound to ' and doesn't seem to work in Call of Duty with Wine. Otherwise it runs fine. It is interesting since the sprint option is available in the United Offensive Expansion Pack with wine and if you bind it to another key, it works.
The Second issue is that every second time I start the game no keys work which means I can't move. The mouse works so I can look around, but I'm a sitting duck! The only way to get out of the game is to to log out and log in again, and then it works fine.

Can someone help me get this installed? I blew away my system and I can't get past the CD change during installation. I don't know how to mount the second CD; it appears on my desktop as if it were mounted but it shows up empty. Once I close the installer, I can see all the files again.

by Ben on Sunday July 8th 2007, 13:16
Maybe I have to manually do some part of the mounting process. I have 2 CD drives in my computer; is it possible that I could tell it to check the second one somehow?
by Antonio López on Sunday July 8th 2007, 18:32
For example, if you are running wine from a shell and your 1st cd is mounted on /media/cdrom0, try doing "wine /media/cdrom0/Launch.exe" rather than doing "cd /media/cdrom0" first and running "wine Launch.exe" afterwards.

"An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This
is normally caused by bad installation media or
a corrupt installation file
Abort Retry"
I have checked the CD visually and run the install in Windows to confirm that there is nothing wrong with my installation media. I have also re-run the install in Wine using the "wine eject d:" to swap back to the first CD and the same error occurs. Something about this error is preventing the complete installation of the game and it will not run, even after applying a cracked exe. Any suggestion on how to get around this would be greatly appreciated.
by Antonio López on Wednesday July 18th 2007, 19:05
I get the same results as you, but have a look and check out the game is installed anyway. Multiplayer game runs OK, but not the single player game (probably that I/O error got something to do with it).
Maybe it's time to bring this game rating down to Bronze since the Loki installer is not available anymore (I tried to, but to no avail, I don't know why).

Also CoD starts but after black screen (present about 1 second) I get "Fatal Error" message window saying "Could not load OpenGL. ...". When click on "OK" in that window "CoD Console" window appears also saying "Could not load OpenGL. ...".
I do have OpenGL drivers (Nvidia 5600 XT) because i use XGL.
How to fix this problem?
Thanks,

Simply put: WINE is a Windows application layer. Therefore it is not the same as Windows 2000 or XP, even though it tries to be. It's like WINE is a green apple, Windows XP is red... Very similar, do the same fuction, but in some ways different. Most programs don't notice this, but Punkbuster does on Call of Duty.

I'm using the ALSA driver (the others give me the 166 sound files missing error). I've tried it with & without emulation, set the app to run in Win2k, Win98, and WinXP, and it's always the same thing.
My hardware is an onboard audio set: Analog Devices AD1885 according to the research I've done. I tried installing almost every package in the repos that has something to do with ALSA but got nowhere.

eject /dev/cdrom
Change disks
mount /dev/cdrom
Then go back to the start to eject and load disk1 again :)

If you still get the problem, you can use the command 'wine eject'.
by Alexander Stanley on Monday April 24th 2006, 18:33
(As Root)
mkdir /mnt/cdrom
chmod -R 0777 /mnt/cdrom
Put he CDROM in the drive.
(As User)
Run "winecfg". Add a new Driver letter (D: or E:) set to "/mnt/cdrom". Make sure it is setup to be a cdrom drive. Save and exit.
MOUNTING:
(As Root)
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom (Substitute /dev/cdrom for your CDROM Device Name)
UNMOUNTING:
umount /mnt/cdrom
eject /mnt/cdrom
You CAN use umount -l /mnt/cdrom if it fails to unmount (CDROMs are read-only) but I wouldn't unless you have to.
For the actual install, see my Loki Installer HOWTO at the top.

eject: tried to use `/mnt/cdrom' as device name but it is no block device
eject: unable to find or open device for: `/mnt/cdrom'
Why is there no way to use the second CD (DVD) drive for disk 2? I can't believe it doesn't just look for it there if it sees more than one CD/DVD drive...
