Virtual On: Cyber Troopers

Cybertroopers Virtual On Operation Moongate, or called VOOM by some, was the first in the Virtual On series. First released in 1995, it wowed players with its combination of smooth 3D movement and unique gameplay. Featuring ten selectable mechs or "virtuaroids", Virtual On is essentially a one-on-one fighting game featuring anime style giant robots.

What separated this game from others of its era was its third-person-from-behind perspective and movement in all three dimensions. Forethought was required to deploy each virtuaroid's array of ranged and melee weapons without leaving opportunities for counter-attack from the opponent. While the tactical emphasis (and unfamiliarity with giant fighting robots) limited the game's appeal in the Western world, Virtual On quickly achieved cult status with anime fans and those who preferred a more "intelligent" action game.
