Rayman M is better described by what it's not than what it is. It's not a karting game based on the characters from a cute platform/adventure game, with a standard track-unlocking structure and a selection of throwaway battle modes, hidden characters and assorted bonus games. However, insert running/climbing/swinging/sliding in place of karting and you're pretty much there.
While eschewing the one element that most clearly defines the famously abused karting genre, Rayman's first multiplayer outing essentially does all the same things, only on foot. Dash over turbo pads, scale walls, swing across gaps with a grappling device and otherwise slide and clamber your way through 12 obstacle courses of steadily increasing complexity. Along with straightforward racing there are two collect-'em-up variations, as well as some token battle arena modes that largely fail to amuse.
