Homer is a freeware made (or at least development is coordinated by) the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory).

It is used to study feasibility and compare different design options of energy supplies, mainly renewables, for rural electrification:
  • hydro power
  • solar photvoltaics
  • wind turbines
  • hydrogen production, storage and combustion
  • battery banks
  • gensets
The designed systems usually are isolated homes or villages, in rural areas of developing countries, with no or little previous access to eletricity.
