What works
Did not try to install using wine, instead used WINXP install folder. Runs. Game play only works in 640x480 resolution but is very smooth. Can't see player's uniform numbers very well. Commentary and game sound works, did not test the in game music EA has. Minicamp also works.
What does not
Any resolution higher than 640x480 freezes. The loading screen doesn't come up properly. Playing with dual monitors screws up the desktop and you have to restart X after the game.

Add d3dx_26.dll, d3dx_27.dll, d3dx_30.dll, d3dx_31.dll, d3dx_32.dll, d3dx_33.dll, msvcr71.dll and msvcp71.dll to the system32 folder in wine. Not all of them are necessary probability, but that's what worked for me.
