IDA Pro 4.9 (Sept 2005)
Limitations of Free version compared to retail:
No remote debugging
No Linux debugging (disassembling only)
No other OS support at all (Mac OSX, WinCE)
Only PE, COFF, OMF, ELF and Dos is supported (not NE)
No console version (idaw.exe)
No graphical view (5.0+)
Only x86 family processor module included (metapc)
No x64 support at all
Some FLIRT signatures are out-dated
Fewer included plugins
Difficulty identifying parameters in some cases (no PIT)
IDA installs and starts perfectly. Disassembly works, saving and reloading files works.
What does not
The context menus that display code or data at the target address when you hover your mouse over a subroutine or data reference do not work. The yellow drop-down overlay is displayed, but is empty.
The main window cannot be minimized; if it is, it cannot be restored. It is possible to right-click on the application in your taskbar and close it; IDA will offer to save your work and exit cleanly.
Debugging an application is *extremely* slow.
What was not tested
Anything other than basic functionality. In particular, plugins were not tested.
