installation (original version and patches), graphics, gameplay, sounds, music, full screen and windowed modes, animations, movies, even the funny mouse cursor
What does not
I tried a "clean" install first -- without following the "how to" procedure -- and found that the installer failed under those conditions.
The desktop (screen and keyboard) tended to become unresponsive if a screen locker/screen saver took over while the game was running in full screen mode. Situations like that proved hard to get out of, and might require an emergency reboot. This could be a general Wine issue - I've seen it in other games, too.
After a failed initial install attempt I followed the extensive "how to" instructions on this page, up to (but not including) the mouse cursor fix. After that the game installed and ran flawlessly. I don't know how much of the "how to" stuff is actually necessary now, but it does seem to be sufficient.
When running the game in full screen mode, do not leave it unattended and in control of your screen - unless you are certain that no other process (such as a screen locker) will attempt to take over. (You can avoid this situation by pressing the Meta ("Windows") key before you leave, to transfer control back to your desktop.)
What was not tested
Multiplayer mode - as the multiplayer server seems to be long gone.
I haven't seen all the different victory conditions play out, nor have I tested all difficulty levels, world map sizes, types of world layouts. Also haven't tried any scenarios.
Version tested: The original CD release, patched up to v. 1.74.
Results may depend on your hardware, particularly your graphics adapter.
The game runs well with my on-board Intel Skylake GPU, but refuses to load to the external Nvidia GPU.

INTERNET GAMES and PBEM were not tested. only multiplayer over LAN is confirmed.
