What works

  • File searches and transfers
  • Most of the different sections and tools like Network, Host Cache, Discovery, graphs, etc.
  • Incomplete images will load in the usual internal window.
  • Monitor windows work.

What does not

  • Most of the menus have problems even after enabling the WINE.MenuFix option. This can be countered by highlighting the menu option desired with the mouse, then pressing enter in lieu of clicking.
  • The Library section is accessible but local file searches or any attempt to reorganize files or move to another folder results in a crash.
  • Like most applications under wine, double clicking a file name will not open it, you must locate and open the file manually.
  • Each file downloaded leaves a 26-byte plaintext file of the same name (with :Zone.Identifier appended to the filename) all of which have identical contents. These are junk and can be safely deleted.
  • The popup info menus that typically appear in Transfers when you hover the mouse over a file (the ones that have the transfer graph, filename, number of sources, ETA, etc.) do not appear.
  • No support for audio and video playback or previewing of incomplete audio and video files.

What was not tested

I think I've pretty much tested every working feature.

Additional Comments

The lack of support for library and previewing incomplete non-image media removes about half of Shareaza's usefulness. File sharing and transfers work though (and in my case, better than in Windows), so if you're willing to put up with the nuances then Shareaza makes for a powerful P2P system. Just make sure to run Moblock or a similar program in the background to help you avoid spam files and illegal content.
