What works

With the recommended OpenGL plugin, patch 1.01, and one registry entry insertal (as described in the HOWTO), it runs just fine:

  •  The menu, and the character selection screen works
  • Loading different levels (it shouldn't crash) and completing the entire game could be done
  • Animations/combos are proper (you can jump, battle fine etc.), triggers/events are also (indeed, texts will be displayed fine etc.)
  • Sounds work fine for me as well (however, tested only with 'Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio', so you can expect different results with other sound settings)

... everything seems to function without a major drawback with the right (recommended) settings so far

What does not

  • Issues with running and throwing objects. You need to tap the buttons and keep trying until it suceeds (kind of a pain). This could be some game programming issue. How nice. You'll hate this one, for sure. It really bothers me after a while.
  • Issues with other graphical settings. Besides the OpenGL (custom one), there is only one that actually works! And that is the 'Voodoo 1-2 D3d v0.4', at a 640x480 screen resolution. Everything else just can't make it to the menu yet.
  • Doesn't play the intro movie (this was similar to my Warcraft III experience, I guess), so if you care about the game, then make sure to watch it yourself before you start to play.
  • Crashes X. After I quit the game, the X was gone by. (Although this is just a personal experience.)

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • Multiplayer
  • Fan-work (custom mods, skins, BODLoader, etc.)
  • Going through the whole game (I just did a level out of curiousity)
  • Other sound setting than 'Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio'

Additional Comments

The 'rOpenGL' graphical stuff works, but under the price of the different level loading (the default level loading shows tips in the starting levels and also the mini screen of each level). Just a notice. I can confirm that the game was faster and smoother than in Windows (for me, at least).

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Installation

Game installs without problem from original CD.

Updating to 1.01

Is well known that patch 1.01 comes with a subdirectory that have different capitalization compared to the original CD and install, while this is not a problem on FAT or NTFS filesystems as these filesystems are set to be  case insensitive, this is an issue on filesystem like ext2/ext3/ext4 (and almost any filesystem used on Linux/Mac OS X). In this case, the original CD install will create a subdirectory called Mss under Bin directory, but the patch creates a subdirectory capitalized as MSS, so the issue is having both a Mss and a MSS directory.

How to fix it?

Install the update normally, then copy the contents of MSS subdirectory into Mss, and then delete MSS.

Graphic Setup

It must be done based on your hardware, as most plugins will not work properly or even refuse to start.

Nvidia

Systems with Nvidia graphic card should use "Video: rOpenGL" that can be downloaded here

With Nvidia cards you will need to add a following registry key with regedit, in a terminal execute:

wine regedit.exe

Then add the following registry key with regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/OpenGL/DisabledExtensions = GL_KTX_buffer_region

You may need to create the key OpenGL and add DisabledExtensions as a string value.

Ati

Systems with Ati graphic card should use "Video: rOpenGL" that can be downloaded here

Intel GMA 950

Users with this card should use Zeckensack's glide wrapper http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/ and r3Dfx Voodoo 1-2 plugin to get playable speed, other plugins are too slow or have too much issues to be playable.

Other cards not listed here

If your card is not listed here or you want to experiment you could try one the following plugins (some os these are considered failsafe)

  • D3D i740 windows98, that is the second best approach to play Blade of Darkness (ok in most situations, but is prone to crash on lava pits levels from the end of the game, this issue is the only one that prevents from finishing the game normally, use it at your own risk)
  • Voodoo 1-2 D3D v4, that works flawless in all situations but is resticted to 640x480 16bpp
  • r3Dfx Voodoo 1-2 that can be used through the following glide wrapper http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/

Rest of plugins not listed here aren't recommended as they usually performs worse or have serious issues during gameplay.

Sound Setup

Almost every plugin works here but I have found that "Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio" gives the best performance with no audio delay.

My character is not running!

This is not a Wine bug, but a difference between how Windows and Linux handles keypresses, in order to fix it execute before launching:

xset r off

And after playing (if you want to restore the typematic rate):

xset r on
