Additional Comments
I tried to install dinput, but that not fixed mouse bug. Maintainer's edit: This was caused by a Xorg issue, please refer to Bug 30057 if you are experiencing a similar behaviour.

Installation
Game installs without problem from original CD.
Updating to 1.01
Is well known that patch 1.01 comes with a subdirectory that have different capitalization compared to the original CD and install, while this is not a problem on FAT or NTFS filesystems as these filesystems are set to be case insensitive, this is an issue on filesystem like ext2/ext3/ext4 (and almost any filesystem used on Linux/Mac OS X). In this case, the original CD install will create a subdirectory called Mss under Bin directory, but the patch creates a subdirectory capitalized as MSS, so the issue is having both a Mss and a MSS directory.
How to fix it?
Install the update normally, then copy the contents of MSS subdirectory into Mss, and then delete MSS.
Graphic Setup
It must be done based on your hardware, as most plugins will not work properly or even refuse to start.
Nvidia
Systems with Nvidia graphic card should use "Video: rOpenGL" that can be downloaded here
With Nvidia cards you will need to add a following registry key with regedit, in a terminal execute:
wine regedit.exe
Then add the following registry key with regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/OpenGL/DisabledExtensions = GL_KTX_buffer_region
You may need to create the key OpenGL and add DisabledExtensions as a string value.
Ati
Systems with Ati graphic card should use "Video: rOpenGL" that can be downloaded here
Intel GMA 950
Users with this card should use Zeckensack's glide wrapper http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/ and r3Dfx Voodoo 1-2 plugin to get playable speed, other plugins are too slow or have too much issues to be playable.
Other cards not listed here
If your card is not listed here or you want to experiment you could try one the following plugins (some os these are considered failsafe)
Rest of plugins not listed here aren't recommended as they usually performs worse or have serious issues during gameplay.
Sound Setup
Almost every plugin works here but I have found that "Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio" gives the best performance with no audio delay.
My character is not running!
This is not a Wine bug, but a difference between how Windows and Linux handles keypresses, in order to fix it execute before launching:
xset r off
And after playing (if you want to restore the typematic rate):
xset r on
