Additional Comments

Use Winetricks and install gdiplus , msxml3, gecko, dotnet20, corefonts, vcrun2005 prior to installing AutoCAD. I used AutoCAD R14 to draw a basic floor plan layout for a two story house in Wine 1.1.19. Although some useful features did not work, such as changing the layer names, I was able to get through the drawing to a level I feel it was complete, with different colors for different layers. I placed dimensions of the rooms in the drawings, put doors, door swings, text, hashes, toilets (ellipses), joined polylines, used fillets, circles, stretches, extends, and pretty much the works to test it out. To say that I was able to complete the drawing to an acceptable level says a lot compared to the newer versions of AutoCAD under wine. Overall, I'm very satisfied with it, but still miss some of the features that don't work. I couldn't imagine trying to create a deliverable drawing in Wine, but it works fine for the home hobbyist or to take home a project where things like layers have already been setup beforehand in order to meet a deadline.

HowTo / Notes

by NSLW on (March 26th 2009)

    1. Use recent version of Wine(tested with Wine-1.1.17)

    2. Download winetricks by following command

    3. Install required components by following command

sh winetricks corefonts tahoma

It will take some time because winetricks will download all above components

     4. Change Screen Resolution in Wine configuration by typing

Then go to Graphics tab and change Screen Resolution from 96 to 108

     (workaround given by )
    5. navigate to your AutoCAD R14 CD and run

wine setup.exe

PlayOnLinux way

You can install your AutoCAD R14 using PlayOnLinux (some kind of gui for Wine). I think it's the easiest method because script will tell you step by step what to do. To do so you'll need:

    1. PlayOnLinux

    2. POL Helper plug-in

Do not use Wine 1.1.19 because in this version there is a regression which causes toolbars to be mis-sized.
