Settings to avoid invisible models and flickering

If you are hit by bug #34052 (invisible character models), or flickering, set this key in the registry as a workaround (it happens on closed Nvidia driver, and to some on Mesa / Intel. It didn't happen to me with Mesa / radeonsi):

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
CheckFloatConstants="enabled"

Another similar issue is bug #46553 when some textures turn black indoors. For now, install  d3dx9_35 native override to work around that.

charakter drawing problems
by fetter_oml on Tuesday June 23rd 2009, 10:58
hi anyone,
im playing the witcher (.de version) since around three days without many problems (healthbar etc), but today (the first time) some strange drawing problems for the charakters came, look here:
omploader.org/vMXZmOQ

Anyone got the same experience?
RE: charakter drawing problems
by Paweł Szymański on Tuesday June 23rd 2009, 12:25
Yes. If restarting the game doesn't help restart the X server. It worked for me.
RE: charakter drawing problems
by fetter_oml on Wednesday June 24th 2009, 6:34
after some research i found out that the error is only if i pm-hibernate my computer while the witcher is still running.
tried also a x server restart, worked fine.
I finished the game
by Rief on Sunday August 17th 2008, 8:35
I can confirm that the game is fully playable under wine. I play the game with the lower configuration on an intel core 2 duo 7500 with a geforce 8600m gt (on acer aspire 5920g) from the start to the end without problems (fps min~20 and max~60). Great game, great wine.
Finished the main game
by Felson on Monday August 4th 2008, 13:24
I played the main game though using the 1.2 fixed exe.
These are the bugs I encountered.
1) Status bars for health, EX and toxicity didn't show (For some reason endurance worked fine.)
2) Using a Catseye potion caused the screen to "split". It would show the left half of the screen , split and show the left half again.
3) Once in a while changing zones would cause the game to hang.
4) When doing the bank quest in chapter 3, while talking to the elf downstairs, my hair disappeared, and the game got very slow until I left the bank.
----------------------------------------------------
Having finished the game, I would love to try the "extras". Anyone know if there is a 1.3 fixed exe out there at all? Or one in the works? Or, if there is any way to get Tages to work under wine?
RE: Finished the main game
by gwydion.dot on Tuesday August 12th 2008, 10:47
They said that the copy protection will be removed with 1.3.
RE: Finished the main game
by Felson on Tuesday August 12th 2008, 11:07
I don't know. But either way, my computer wouldn't run the 1.3 exe. Could just have been a config issue I guess. I removed the game to get back space, so I can't play with it ATM. After I finish the one I am playing now, I will put it back and try it out. Maybe by then the expansion scenario will be done.
RE: Finished the main game
by Florian on Tuesday September 23rd 2008, 13:58
I think you can play version 1.3 with the 1.2 No cd crack.
Invisible Launcher
by Kevin Brott on Wednesday June 11th 2008, 22:21
I seem to have a completely different issue menu-wise.

Ubuntu 8.04.1 - 2.6.24-19-generic kernel - x86_64 - nvidia 173.14.05 drivers (although it was happening on the 169.12 as well).

The game installs, and patches just fine - but the Launcher doesn't appear at all, ever. I can see it via wmctrl:
0x0380000d 2 888 404 392 621 beastiary The Witcher game launcher

I can see the silhouette in my workspace switcher, and alt-tab gives an outline for it - but there's nothing visible or click-able on the screen. I do have directx 9.0c (Nov 2007) installed (long list of libraries I have to flag native or builting-only).

No clue how to work around it yet. Any clues?
RE: Invisible Launcher
by Florian on Thursday June 12th 2008, 5:55
Hello,
If you want to use the launcher, you need a native gdiplus.dll
The game should start if you change to path "System" in the witcher directory and launch the witcher.exe

wine 57, no mouse in menu
by Vyacheslav Goltser on Sunday March 16th 2008, 19:22

Possible performance problem
by Florian on Thursday March 13th 2008, 16:41
Hi,
I played a bit with the graphic settings of this game. It looks for me, like the "lightquality" setting has some problems with wine. I set it to the very highest position and the performance is very very bad. On mid position it is fine. (lowering anti-aliasing gave a performance boost, too)
With FarCry I have issues with the lightquality, too. On highest setting, some models (NPCs, vehicles and ladders) cannot be seen. On middle lightquality I can see them.
I cannot draw a direct connection here but can the lightquality be possibly the performance killer here?
(I do not know how this behaves in windows). But the issue with FarCry seemed to confirm this for me...

I am afraid, how the enhanced patch tomorrow might improve the performance. According to a flyer by CD-Project it should be available tomorrow.
No fonts in the menu
by Florian on Friday February 15th 2008, 13:00
Hi,
Does anyone here know what Font The Witcher uses? I installed the game successfully and patched it to 1.2. But in the main menu I get no text displayed. I only can see some animated buttons if i move the mouse but not text.
The package msttcorefonts is installed on my ubuntu.

I've got the same problem, maybe someone knows fix for this issue?
RE: No fonts in the menu

Click on regsetup.exe ;-)
RE: No fonts in the menu
by #HasH# on Thursday February 28th 2008, 8:51
I don't have that file in my witcher's directory or on dvd. Maybe u could upload it and give a link to that file? I would be really glad.
RE: No fonts in the menu
by Trokij on Thursday February 28th 2008, 12:09
There it is: www.megaupload.com/it/?d=F7YJ2K57
Hope it works... let it me know :-)
RE: No fonts in the menu
by Florian on Friday February 29th 2008, 15:19
Nope, it does not work. And I do not really understand what this file should do.

The Terminal gives me:
mcflow@errorkiste:/media/sdb1/witcher$ wine regsetup.exe
fixme:ntoskrnl:KeInitializeTimerEx 0x110ad8 0
FILE NOT FOUND.

REGSetup V1.0 coded by Kranf.

usage: REGSetup [filename]
[filename]: The data (reg file) to fusion to the registry. If
this parameter is not specified, the default filename
'regsetup.txt' will be used.

REGSetup is a replacement tool for 'regedit'. However, there is a
small difference with 'regedit': REGSetup replace all the '%d'
inside the key values with the current directory.
RE: No fonts in the menu
by Trokij on Friday February 29th 2008, 15:33
Looks like you have a problem to download it...
but i have tried and i can download it!
I guess you must retry to download it;-)
After you have that file you must put it in "the witcher" main folder and click on it... i had same problem, no font in menus and no voice in game, after 2 click on "regsetup.exe" everything go in place!!
RE: No fonts in the menu
by #HasH# on Friday February 29th 2008, 15:35
It also didn't work for me but I edited registry manually. I had to add following entries to registry (by using regedit)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CD Projekt Red]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CD Projekt Red\The Witcher]
"InstallFolder"="C:\Program Files\The Witcher"
"Language"="5"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CD Projekt Red\The Witcher\1.00.0000]

I have polish version of the witcher, so maybe u should change value for "Language"
RE: No fonts in the menu
by Trokij on Friday February 29th 2008, 15:39
And now it works?or still does'not working?
If is not i think you have to re download it :-(
RE: No fonts in the menu
by #HasH# on Friday February 29th 2008, 15:46
Editing registry manually(as I posted above) solved the problem and now i have the text in the menu and in the whole game.

If u ask about regsetup.exe, i can't download it again because megaupload got limit of connections for my country.
RE: No fonts in the menu
by Trokij on Friday February 29th 2008, 16:09
"...i can't download it again because megaupload got limit of connections for my country."
If you want to download again from megaupload you have just to disconnect and reconnect to internet;-)
RE: No fonts in the menu
by Florian on Saturday March 1st 2008, 11:45
I could download it, but it complained about a missing file that regsetup.exe needs.
I am not very familiar with the wine regedit. Can someone give me a hint on how to add the keys correctly?
RE: No fonts in the menu
by #HasH# on Saturday March 1st 2008, 13:42
Copy this:

--------cut here-------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CD Projekt Red]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CD Projekt Red\The Witcher]
"InstallFolder"="C:\Program Files\The Witcher\"
"Language"="5"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CD Projekt Red\The Witcher\1.00.0000]

------------cut here---------------

paste it in any text editor and save witch .reg extension. Then run regedit by typing regedit in terminal. Click on registry -> import and select your .reg file that you just have created.

PS. You might need to change the value for language, because I have polish version of witcher and 5 might be for polish language.

PS. Also InstallFolder can be changed if you have witcher in different directory.

Rag dolls
by Zbigniew Braniecki on Saturday January 12th 2008, 9:47
And don't you see things like this: img299.imageshack.us/img299/4263/screenshot24kn4.png ?

I installed 1.2, with noCD, with that directx dll file, and everything works, but it looks like this. Characters are not moving (they're shadows do)
RE: Rag dolls
by Zbigniew Braniecki on Saturday January 12th 2008, 14:11
Hmm.... I tried to copy d3dx9_35.dll from my windows xp sp2 dir, and from some page found by google, but I still have this rag doll effect.

What files did you copy to ./wine/drive_c/windows/system32 to make it working?

Maybe it's some issue with my card. What graphic card do you have? What linux driver do you use for it?
RE: Rag dolls
by gwydion.dot on Saturday January 12th 2008, 14:31
Hi

Only this dll file. From a page where I found through google.

I have a nvidia GeForce 8600GTS with driver 169.07.
RE: Rag dolls
by Zbigniew Braniecki on Saturday January 12th 2008, 16:54
Eh... I upgraded my nvidia driver to latest 169.07 with Envy (I was using the Ubuntu 7.10 one, 96.x :/)

but it didn't help. I have GeForce 7800 GT, and latest Wine (0.9.53), and still the same problem :(

I'll try to recompile wine with new drivers. We'll see...
RE: Rag dolls
by Zbigniew Braniecki on Saturday January 12th 2008, 17:05
And what distro do you use?
RE: Rag dolls
by gwydion.dot on Saturday January 12th 2008, 17:39
Gentoo AMD 64, I've update to 0.9.53 works too fine.
RE: Rag dolls
by Zbigniew Braniecki on Saturday January 12th 2008, 20:06
Ehh... still not sure what's wrong with my system then (I got confirmation of the ragdoll issue from other testers in Witcher 1.0 discussion, so it's not exclusively my problem).

I have:
- Ubuntu 7.10
- Wine 0.9.53 (tested a package and self compiled)
- Latest Nvidia drivers via Envy
- GeForce 7800 GT
- Witcher 1.2 with noCD.

and the game works fine beside of this characters not moving problem. :/
RE: Rag dolls
by gwydion.dot on Saturday January 12th 2008, 20:39
Do you have the Russian 1.2 crack? when not get it from gamecopyworld.

maybe the your crack is not good.

btw: How is the performance on your system?
RE: Rag dolls
by Zbigniew Braniecki on Sunday January 13th 2008, 7:44
Yes, I have the crack from gamecopyworld.

the performance is pretty much ok. It could have been better, but it works rather smooth.
RE: Rag dolls
by DL on Thursday January 17th 2008, 1:40
It could be an issue with 7xxx cards, I have a 7900gs and am experiencing the same issue. My specifications:

Gentoo AMD64
Wine 0.9.53
Nvidia-drivers 100.14.19
Geforce 7900GS
Witcher 1.2 + russian 1.2 crack

Game runs slower than windows at medium settings, about 18-30 fps during the first battle, with it being more like 30-50 fps on windows. This is just by eyeballing it though, don't know if there is an in game fps counter and don't think there is anything like fraps for linux.

Also I had to set lighting to "low" otherwise I get a black screen with only the hud visible, probably uses HDR on medium and higher settings which IIRC is unsupported with wine.
RE: Rag dolls
by Zbigniew Braniecki on Thursday January 17th 2008, 11:48
I have no problem to run Witcher 1.2 on high details.

Beside of the rag doll issue :)

"It could be an issue with 7xxx cards, I have a 7900gs and am experiencing the same issue."

Yep, you can add my 7600GT to the list of cards having that "rag dolls" problem. I've read all comments to 1.0 version, and it really seems you're right:

Known "rag dolls" cards:
7600GT
7800GT
7800GTX
7900GS

Known "noproblem" cards:
8600GTS (two different people!)
RE: Rag dolls
by Dawid Hanak on Saturday January 19th 2008, 18:44
Wouter Cox has 8800GTS 640MB and also didn't write about having "rag doll" problem, though he has low frame rate...
RE: Rag dolls

>Known "noproblem" cards:
>8600GTS (two different people!)

I think I am doing something wrong here. I have an 8600GTS, too running the 169.07 driver.
The game runs terribly slow, but no rag dolls.
RE: Rag dolls
by mysha on Wednesday June 4th 2008, 22:16
The problem is that Witcher is using hardware skinning of characters, but it's not supported on older cards. DirectX manages by emulating it in software.
I've found references to 'g_cAuroraSettings.m_bPerformHardwareSkinning' in the witcher.exe file, but trying to set it to false in the scripts brought no results. The non-compiled (.lua) scripts are loaded first, so if you could do something like:

global.lua:
include('global.luc')
g_cAuroraSettings.m_bPerformHardwareSkinning = false

then maybe it could work (providing that software skinning is implemented in the engine). Or maybe try to decompile one of the scripts and set the skinning to false at the end.
Back
