What works

Everything including midi in & out, using jackd & qsynth before starting Finale, and the adjusting the midisettings in Finale.
Take care that the midi playback is selected, not the playback through vst.
In the midi setup, at the end of the list there will be a midiportnumber that can be selected; through this one, midi playback just works ...
To work around the error mentioned below about MSVCR80.dll & FINMIDI.DLL, after some time of fruitless searching and downloading the dll-file and installing the vcredist_x86.exe, I did the following:
1. I uninstalled wine with the package manager of my distro
2. I backed up & put away out of my home folder the ~/.wine directory
3. I re-installed wine & used the winetricks-script to install vcrun2008sp1
4. I re-installed Finale & everything works as before

What does not

since wine 1.3.32, all graphic issues seem to have vanished! (curly braces & ties)

What was not tested

playback through vst

Additional Comments

Entering notes through the midi keyboard with hyperscribe gives me 0 latency, while i cannot say that of my experiences with a real windows computer ... I feel I can work like a professional on my linux box with this program!

Curly braces and ties are fixed now!
by S. Christian Collins on Friday November 11th 2011, 17:29
I just upgraded from Wine 1.3.28 to 1.3.32 and now everything in Finale 2008 is drawn correctly (not to mention the graphics are faster), both on-screen and on the printed copy. I wonder if this is something that got fixed with the new DIB engine.

I'm so glad this is finally fixed (wine version 1.3.32)
Thanks for letting me know!
Things I've noticed
by Emma Cohen on Monday September 29th 2008, 3:15
-Upon opening it says "Error opening MIDI driver FINMIDI: Module not found." The console output specifies "err:module:import_dll Library MSVCR80.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\FINALE 2008\\FINMIDI.DLL") not found. I think this is related to the lack of sound.

-Although it won't play any sounds itself, it will save a file as a MIDI to be played by another application; but movie player complains (/after/ playing the file) that it can't find the right codec (although that may just happen to me).

-'Save As' only shows alternative file types if I do it before doing anything else. If I make any changes beforehand or if I open the window a second time it shows a blank box there.

Oh, and wine's IE doesn't seem to be up to displaying the help files.
