What works

Everything I have tested works, except what I have listed below. MIDI input and output works perfectly, as long as I'm not using the built-in softsynth. The program has been very stable for me while working for long hours at a time.

What does not

Piano braces and ties are not properly rounded, but are rather angular. Unfortunately, it seems to print this way as well. The "Compile Postscript" option has glitches (Finale's fault), so the only real option to get a proper print-out is to open the file on 2008 (or Notepad 2008) on a Windows box and print from there. Also, I haven't been able to get the built-in softsynth to work properly (including Garritan Personal Orchestra).

What was not tested

I didn't go out of my way to get the soft-synth to work, since I preferred to use a native Linux synth anyway (faster).

Additional Comments

If the angular braces and ties are ever fixed, I would highly recommend this software to any Linux musician. The same problem affects the free Notepad version as well.

Curly braces and ties are fixed now!
by S. Christian Collins on Friday November 11th 2011, 17:29
I just upgraded from Wine 1.3.28 to 1.3.32 and now everything in Finale 2008 is drawn correctly (not to mention the graphics are faster), both on-screen and on the printed copy. I wonder if this is something that got fixed with the new DIB engine.

Things I've noticed
by Emma Cohen on Monday September 29th 2008, 3:15
-Upon opening it says "Error opening MIDI driver FINMIDI: Module not found." The console output specifies "err:module:import_dll Library MSVCR80.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\FINALE 2008\\FINMIDI.DLL") not found. I think this is related to the lack of sound.

-Although it won't play any sounds itself, it will save a file as a MIDI to be played by another application; but movie player complains (/after/ playing the file) that it can't find the right codec (although that may just happen to me).

-'Save As' only shows alternative file types if I do it before doing anything else. If I make any changes beforehand or if I open the window a second time it shows a blank box there.

Oh, and wine's IE doesn't seem to be up to displaying the help files.
