The game doesn't capture the mouse until you click once, so when you start a new game don't be surprised if mouse look initially appears broken.

Hosting a LAN game will fail unless you run winetricks directplay in your wineprefix. I was able to join the LAN game as well, from another machine running the same config. Tested in a clean wineprefix with no other DLL overrides.

HOWTO

To install AVP Gold, a copy protection method must be passed. To do this, you need to use a third party fuse based utility.

from a terminal:

wget -O fuse-cda.c http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=18991
gcc -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -lcdio -lfuse fuse-cda.c -o fuse-cda
mkdir /tmp/fuse
./fuse-cda /tmp/fuse

then

configured drive d: to CDROM and set path to /tmp/fuse in winecfg
ran installer, switched to cd2
clicked verify in installer - passed
configured drive d: to /media/cdrom0 in winecfg
switched to cd1, completed install
