What works

Everything works (game, music), but with small glitches.

What does not

  • Intro movie plays, if the proper video codec is installed (see HOWTO); otherwise - blank screen.
  • Clicking mouse right button skips the intro movie and produces 2 windows: "BATTLE" and "PD". "BATTLE" window is blank, and is initially focused onto. Must switch to "PD" using Alt-Tab. The game runs (almost) perfectly from there.
  • Intro video playback (when codec is installed) is not in synch. Video lags heavily, but the sound is played correctly.
  • Small video clips shown during the game won't play even with the proper codec installed (MS RLE, msrle32.dll).
  • Game lags heavily in certain areas (esp. during the "blinds" effect when switching to the loading screen) and while hovering the mouse cursor over certain objects.
  • Sometimes crashes when run in en_US locale, but works fine when run in the japanese locale ("LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine pd4.exe").
  • Certain areas of the sprites and all text that should be white (#FFFFFF?) are black (alpha problem?).
  • Rarely, dialog boxes that pop up in the game, cause it to hang.
Notable warnings in the console log:
  • fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x34f858,0x00000000), stub!
  • fixme:mci:MCIWndProc support for MCIWNDM_ message WM_USER+114 not implemented
  • fixme:xrandr:X11DRV_XRandR_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 16
  • fixme:xrandr:X11DRV_XRandR_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • It is suspected that only dialog boxes with a single button cause hang-ups. To be further tested.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
  • To play the opening video, you must have Indeo 4.1 codec installed.
    • Run "regedit" and locate the following registry key (create "drivers32" if it's missing): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
    • add a String key named "vidc.iv41", for its value input "ir41_32.dll"
    • obtain "ir41_32.dll" file (Indeo codec) and copy it into "windows/system32" folder in your wine installation.
  • In-game small video clips require MS RLE video codec (msrle32.dll). You can register it the same way as described above, just name the new String key "vidc.mrle" and enter "msrle32.dll" for its value. However, this doesn't help much... and you will have to go with blank rectangles for now. Or switch off the in-game video clips in the game settings menu.
  • The game is prone to crashes when run under "non-native" locales. Make sure you change your locale to "ja_JP.UTF-8" before running wine. A one-liner "LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine pd4.exe" works fine for me.
About the issues
The game seems to have issues with a "true" full-screen in wine, so it should be run with "Virtual Desktop" wine option enabled.
