Selected Test Results

What works

  • Installation
    • DLLs from http://www.launchgame.com/dxwebdlls.tar.gz must be placed in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32
    • DirectX installation must be completed
    • An error occurred with a .NET installation (the first thing done after the installer unpacks), but it didn't seem to have any averse effect on the rest of the installation process
  • Multiplayer
  • Practice
  • Replays

What does not

  • Shadows
  • Foliage
  • High Graphics Settings
    • Some models weren't skinned correctly with texture quality set to high
    • Experienced disappearing player models and other oddities with effect quality set to high (I'm not entirely sure if that setting is to blame though)
  • Tutorial
    • Dummies for the whirling-blade demonstration weren't dying, effectively trapping me (you're not allowed to move). This may be a generic game bug, but I don't have the ability to test on Windows at this time

Additional Comments

I tested using a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.10 using the proprietary "nvidia" video driver. Wine was installed from the repository listed on WineHQ. I didn't change any of Wine's default settings except for the OS mode (I set it to XP). I am able to run the game at a higher resolution and with greater texture quality than I can on Windows Vista (and still have it smooth). It appears to work fine with Compiz.

HowTo / Notes

Installation Instructions

Installation Instructions:

  1. Ensure the following DLLs are located in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32:
    • fusion.dll
    • inseng.dll
    • mscoree.dll
    • msvcr70.dll
These are required for the DirectX web installer to work correctly. They can be obtained here: http://www.launchgame.com/dxwebdlls.tar.gz
  2. Download and execute the latest installer from the Savage 2 website
  3. Complete the DirectX web installation when prompted
  4. Once installation is complete, the game should be ready to play
Known Issues

Known Issues:

Some graphical features do not work correctly, notably shadows and foliage (dynamic grass). Graphical glitches (corrupt model textures, disappearing or wrongly placed models, warped polygons, etc) may occur depending on Wine or in-game graphics settings. See individual test results for further information. This section will be updated if strong correlations between glitches and specific settings are established.
