Game installs with no prob, and runs if full installation of all components on disc are installed, except for DirectX (Which should be skipped). Adding d3dx9_29.dll from dx90c/Feb2006_d3dx9_29_x86.cab to windows/system32 necessary for game to launch post patch. (Admin note: Actually you can let it try and install DirectX and the only thing it should do is install any of those d3dx9 files that you're missing, saving a bit of effort).
Sony Launchpad, PotBS login, patching, news mostly works (see below), windowed and full screen post login works. Works fine with Metacity and Compiz-Fusion WMs, even with full screen. Game also saves and loads settings properly, and quits properly (not true till recently, though unknown if it was potbs or Wine that changed.)
What does not
background and text formatting for news not displayed properly at login, and no text is displayed if mozilla and gecko are not installed first. Loading is 4-5x longer, but only after initial login. Loading between zones / instances just as fast. "Local Map" sometimes displays wrong icons. This is also an issue running the game natively, but it is different and worse here. Game gets about half frame rate on full spec (aside from max avatars, which kills the game under windows). Hardware acceleration does not appear to be taking place for PhysX (water quality is much nicer with PhysX HA).
What was not tested
Port battles, unfortunately :( & Society leader 'tools' for lack of opportunity.
Did not try open source nvidia driver, only non-free (Admin note: Currently the OpenSource nVidia driver doesn't even support 3D so it wouldn't have been any better). Also did not 'mess with' or attempt to adjust wine settings / libraries for better performance, aside from installation of d3dx9_29.dll.
Did not try changing screen resolutions in full screen mode, as this does not work under windows anyway, though havn't tried in a few weeks.
Problems that exist when running game natively are a bit worse, but the game is very new, and relatively bugless compared to other mmorpg's within their first 6 months. Water renders differently. Beta client 1 month before release would not install. Tested game again with Wine 0.9.53 with release version of PotBS, and did not run. 0.9.54 fixed most of the problems, though unplayably slow with all specs turned up. Turning off anti-aliasing and lowering texture resolutions made it work, but it really takes away from a beautiful game. Also, login would be saved, but default server selection, and game preferences were not saved. 0.9.55 + several game patches since means full beauty and no reason to prefer playing it under windoze. Only persisting problems since patches (Wine and PotBS) are mentioned above. Wine was installed from Ubuntu repository (see version above) with all 'suggested' and 'recommended' packages. Test Machine: Asus Crosshair w/ X2 6400+ Black Edition, 4Gb PC8500, Nvidia 8800GTX & Ageis PhysX Card
