What works
potbsintaller.exe ...after a few crashes.
The installer will crash many times but eventually it will go one step further each time, then eventually it will load and update, (I have no idea why--I'm just swingin' in the dark) but it works from a WINE install as well as a copy from a windows install (though that would probably save a ton of time if you already had that) I had 8 crashes before it went. I had to use the System Activity monitor to End Process on wine explorer.exe and BRUI.exe, BRSptSvs.exe, BRSptStub.exe after each crash. (you may not need to)
The key to getting it to install and patch is chmod'ing the file permissions to "chmod +rwxrwxrwx /path/to/potbsinstaller.exe"
I had the installer in the download folder of the virtual C: drive so mine looked like "chmod +rwxrwxrwx ~/.wine/drive_c/users/roman/downloads/potbsinstall.exe" (i suppose you could put it anywhere on the /drive_c and it would work and save a bit of typing.)
Everything works: sound, ship combat, solo fleeting, small group fleeting, avatar combat, trading, AH, etc..tested with two instances, three slowed my laptop down too much but two was doable for testing out ship and av combat on the test server.
Running @ 1920 x 1080 on high setting in wine.
Tested on Linux Mint 18.2 KDE Sonya (Spectre XTtouchsmart 15-4010nr with a 1TB SSD ext4, 32GB SSD as linuxswap and 8gigs of DDR3 at 1600mhz on a 1.9ghz i7 chip)
Performance is only slightly better on windows though more instances can be open > on Wine it's playable as a two box set-up but perfectly good solo > VMware 12 Player with VMware Tools is playable solo on lowered settings > Virtualbox laggy on even low settings and ship models not displayed properly with map errors and open sea crashes due to much less ram allocated to the game. YMMV

Additional Comments
The pobtsinstall.exe and brwc.exe will crash a times but eventually they'll work will go one step further each time, then eventually it will load and update, (I have no idea why--I'm just swingin' in the dark) but it works from a wine install as opposed to a copy from a windows install (though that would probably save a ton of time if you already had that) Install with potbsinstall.exe (if you don't have a win copy already) update with brwc.exe when it needs patching, and launch with PotBS.exe (patched for 4GB memory) ***The key to getting it to install is chmod'ing the file permissions to "chmod +rwxrwxrwx /path/to/potbsinstaller.exe" *** as explained here --- https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2269263 ***AND using winetricks to set winecfg to win98 also works in win2000, which it won't do on it's own in 2.02.*** Which I found after committing the sin of trying to run wine as sudo. Granted, this program is a known quantity to me so the risk was minimal...either way it didn't work as sudo, kdesudo and gksudo crashed while trying to load. I had the installer in the download folder of the virtual C: drive so mine looked like "chmod +rwxrwxrwx ~/.wine/drive_c/users/roman/downloads/potbsinstall.exe" (i suppose you could put it anywhere on the /drive_c and it would work and save a bit of typing.) As per the previous working version on Wine 1.7.46 : Winetricks installed: d3dx9_43, msxml3, physx, vcrun2010, flash player, microsoft core fonts and .dotnet20(not sure if that was necessary, but hey it works) - 4gb_patch has to be applied to the file PotBS.exe to avoid an out of memory error (it can be downloaded from http://www.ntcore.com/files/4gb_patch.zip and applied executing the command "wine 4gb_patch.exe PotBS.exe", both files being in the same directory). This has to be done after every update. -Game can be launched by BOTH the bitraider client BWRC.exe and PotBS.exe by modifying the files permissions ***"chmod +rwxrwxrwx /path/to/potbsfile.exe" *** to avoid admin or sudo issues because you own that sh*t now. (I'd be willing to bet the installer would work again on 1.7.46 if the chmod changes were made) Gratuitous Screenshots: https://ibb.co/cdJvUv https://ibb.co/jVqaUv https://ibb.co/n7c0wa https://ibb.co/dwgSba https://ibb.co/dqN0wa https://ibb.co/eEndhF https://ibb.co/hm9Kpv
