If you're not using an English patch, install and use wineloc. All Japanese characters in the game display as mojibake by default, and an unreadable visual novel is pretty pointless. As this is an English-language database, I have not to factor this into evaluation. With the patch Clannad has been the easiest application I've run with wine. No voodoo needed.
