"Cubase LE is the OEM version of Cubase (based on
version 1) that comes "free" bundled with audio hardware... [it is] a
fully functional cut-down version. It is not a supported product."
-Cubase Wiki
It is basically a stripped-down OEM version of their popular
Cubase DAW that comes bundled with many popular audio interfaces, but
it has full MIDI support, 24-bit capability, 2 master VSTi slots and a
few VST inserts per track and a track count up to 48 tracks. I figured
that I would submit this since many people who have bought PreSonus, EMU
or M-audio gear etc probably have a copy collecting dust somewhere,
even though it is a perfectly usable, albeit limited.
This version is more stable than the older versions, but it offers fewer VST and VSTi slots.

What works
I installed this on a whim because I had the disk OEM from a bit of hardware that I purchased. The program installs and runs right out of the box. The update installs fine too. I tested the included VSTi instruments and VST plugins and they seem to work. I tried the default trial projects, and I sequenced a few drum loops, recorded a snippit and imported some audio, and there were no crashes.
What does not
The playback is quirky with the stock setup, which is not surprising considering how twitchy Steinberg's DAWs are in terms of hardware support and drivers. Juggling some settings cleared things up.
Workarounds
What was not tested
I have not tried the wine ASIO driver yet, nor have I tried JACK, but i expect that would smooth out the performance over the stock settings. I also have not tried ReWire.

Additional Comments
Perhaps I should have given it a Platinum rating, because the program functions under WINE about on-par with running it under MS Windows... but it is a bit quirky regardless. I also Imagine that installing ASIO and JACK would help as well, but it is not a prerequisite. There is a much more modern version out that I do not own, but I may contact the distributer about an upgrade so that I can test it out.
