What works

Everything game related seems to work fine. I installed the F1 2009 mod version 1.4 and did most of my testing there.

What does not

The game FPS were low so I had to turn down all the settings to lowest, and use the DX8 profile of the game. The DX7 profile does not draw textures properly, but the DX8 and DX9 profiles work.

Additional Comments

My Setup: Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04, Intel Core i7 920. ATI Radeon HD4850 with Catalyst 9.4/9.5 drivers. Installation: You will need the winetricks script from: http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks and cabextract installed from your package manager. If you are installing from the DVD, you can open the Setup.exe with wine and follow the instructions. If you are using the download from the rfactor website, you will need to do "sh winetricks ie6" from the commandline before the install. For both methods, do NOT install directX when it prompts you to. Wine has a built in directX that runs faster. Instead you will need to install some libraries required for the game with "sh winetricks d3dx9". Once that is done, you should have rFactor installed but it will not work properly. In order to make the game work properly, you will need to run "wine regedit" from the commandline. Using the information on this page: http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys you will have to add a key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER-->Software-->Wine-->Direct3D as shown on that page. In the Direct3D key, you will need to add a string for DirectDrawRenderer and set it to opengl, a string for VideoMemorySize and set it to your video memory in MB and a string for OffscreenRenderingMode and set it to fbo. Refer to the UsefulRegistryKeys page for information about how to do this and for other keys that can be tweaked to change performance. If you are having problems with getting the game DVD to work with copy protection, you may have to get a nocd patch or make sure that the cd drive is properly detected in winecfg.
