What works
Single player races, multiplayer races, my controller
I chose to install the bundled DirectX in the installer and it worked fine without any overrides or anything.
Performance on my Radeon HD6870 with open source drivers is slightly worse than Windows but very playable. I also tried it with native DirectX 9 using drivers from this PPA and Wine from this PPA. It results in corrupt user interface text once in races but the greatly improved performance is worth it. I recommend checking it out if you have an older AMD card like mine.
What does not
Anti-aliasing, although that might just be my drivers.
Vsync, although it didn't work in this game for me even on Windows so it might just be my setup again.
Exporting a replay to a video.

You can set a framerate cap in UserData/yourprofile/yourprofile.PLR. Search for a 'Max Framerate' line. I recommend doing this as otherwise the framerate will go wild on the menus, causing a lot of unnecessary GPU strain.

Configure Wine and set d3dx9_42 as (builtin) in Libraries.
Make sure to check if Shader Support is active in Graphics.
