Garry's Mod

Garry's Mod 11 (Source 2007)
Garry's mod allows people to play around with valve's physics engine, to spawn props and construct weird devices. The game features several default levels for Gmod, and can be extended by other valve games, such as half-life (1 and 2), the episodes and for instance portal and TF2.
There are several game modes available, the default being sandbox, but possibilities include Zombie Survival (scary), Space build, where one builds a spacecraft to conquer planets, and Build to the Top (an external map) which is great fun in multiplayer.

What works

  • General game play.
  • Pretty much all included tools.
  • Most props.
  • Most NPCs (all I've tested).
  • Mods I've used (such as wire, stargate). See here for the mods.

What does not

  • Some mods (freezes during loading).
  • Loading fast - although this is in-part due to my hardware, I have seen significant slow-down on much faster systems; this can be in part blamed on all the mods the player can have the game load at start-up. This has improved over WINE releases though.
  • Player being hit by certain props (crashes).
  • Being being hit by any prop quickly (e.g. stand inside a hollow object, such as a container, and violently shake it using physics gun) (crashes).
  • Some font rendering (particularly in-game terminal - can enable via advanced keyboard options)
  • Due to performance of Steam, sometimes when the games list has not loaded, attempting to load Garry's Mod may produce error that you must have a Source-based game to play it.
  • Launching games can still produce errors (normally fourth time.
  • 'Garry's Mod School' a flash video based help/tutorial system built into the game, normally accessed via the menu or F1 key, just displays black blank area where video would normally play.

What was not tested

  • Many mods (there are pretty much thousands of them)
  • Using content/maps from all the other compatible source-based games
  • Running in DirectX 9 (normally default)
  • Multi-player element

Additional Comments

I performed these tested running the game in DirectX 8 (launch Garry's Mod with option '-dxlevel 80') mode, as: a) Source games always take a severe performance hit under Wine b) My machine isn't all-to powerful (nVidia GeForce 7900 Go) With DX8 it runs quite fast, although some effects can slow it down - these include the effect applied to props when spawning them, and thrusters' effect (although this can be disabled on the 'Q Menu', under hiding on the last tab).

How to run Garry's mod

If your garry's mod crashes before submitting a bug or commenting on here, here is what you should try:

This should fix any HUD issues you may have: (You may not be able to see certain effects like fire in the game with this)
In steam right click Garry's mod click Properties click "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..." Enter this:
-dxlevel 81
to run in windowed mode add: -window -h 864 -w 1152

This will stop the crash when being killed by a moving object:
In winecfg (terminal -> winecfg) click Add application on the Applications tab
Browse to Program Files\Steam\steamapps\(username)\garrysmod
select hl2.exe and click Open
With hl2.exe selected in the list change the windows version to Windows 98 (via the drop down box near the bottom is should be default say "Use global settings")
Hit Apply/OK, then try to launch Garry's mod again
