Additional Comments
The game will crash if: a player dies from being hit by a physical prop an NPC dies from being hit by a physical prop You can work around the former by using http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=54065 The Q menu does not work properly, and you aren't able to move the mouse around while it's open. To work around this, you can make a new config file with the name qmenufix.cfg in your steamapps//garrysmod/garrysmod/cfg directory. the contents of qmenufix.cfg should be: alias showmenu "+menu; bind q hidemenu" alias hidemenu "-menu; bind q showmenu" bind q showmenu alias showcontext "+menu_context; bind c hidecontext" alias hidecontext "-menu_context; bind c showcontext" bind c showcontext save it, and right-click on gmod in steam. click properties -> set launch options. add "+exec qmenufix.cfg" (without quotes) to the end of the line. click ok, and run gmod.

If your garry's mod crashes before submitting a bug or commenting on here, here is what you should try:
This should fix any HUD issues you may have: (You may not be able to see certain effects like fire in the game with this)
In steam right click Garry's mod click Properties click "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..." Enter this:
-dxlevel 81
to run in windowed mode add: -window -h 864 -w 1152
This will stop the crash when being killed by a moving object:
In winecfg (terminal -> winecfg) click Add application on the Applications tab
Browse to Program Files\Steam\steamapps\(username)
select hl2.exe and click Open
With hl2.exe selected in the list change the windows version to Windows 98 (via the drop down box near the bottom is should be default say "Use global settings")
Hit Apply/OK, then try to launch Garry's mod again
