Garry's Mod

Garry's Mod 11 (Source 2007)
Garry's mod allows people to play around with valve's physics engine, to spawn props and construct weird devices. The game features several default levels for Gmod, and can be extended by other valve games, such as half-life (1 and 2), the episodes and for instance portal and TF2.
There are several game modes available, the default being sandbox, but possibilities include Zombie Survival (scary), Space build, where one builds a spacecraft to conquer planets, and Build to the Top (an external map) which is great fun in multiplayer.

Additional Comments

Important note:- In order to play the game without crashing from prop-deaths or deaths in general, follow these instructions: * Open winecfg. * Set the windows version to windows 2000. * Leave winecfg open and open steam, log in. * Go back to winecfg and set the windows version to windows 98. * Close winecfg * Start Garry's Mod. Thanks to Jordan M. for sharing that tip! If you have any problems with no HUD then add "-dxlevel 8x" where x is a number between 0 and 9 (without quotations) to the launch options in the Steam game properties window. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Some of the larger levels with more polygons (e.g. gm_atomic) can cause a severe drop in framerate, even at the lowest settings. That's possibly down to my hardware, so I didn't list it under "What does not work". It's also good practice to, like for other games, turn off Compiz/Compiz-Fusion/Beryl or any other compositor before starting the game in order to get the best performance (fusion-icon makes this very easy to do). Hardware Specification (overview): *XpertVision Nvidia 8600GT *AMD Athlon 3500+ 2.2 GHz *ASUS(tek) A85-E Deluxe Motherboard Software Specification (overview): *OpenSuSE 11.0 x86 *wine-1.1.8 Side note: I averaged 70 frames per second with Compiz-Fusion turned off on maximum hardware settings, compared with 25 frames per second with Aero turned off in Windows Vista. I think I know which O/S I'm using to play Garry's Mod now... :)

How to run Garry's mod

If your garry's mod crashes before submitting a bug or commenting on here, here is what you should try:

This should fix any HUD issues you may have: (You may not be able to see certain effects like fire in the game with this)
In steam right click Garry's mod click Properties click "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..." Enter this:
-dxlevel 81
to run in windowed mode add: -window -h 864 -w 1152

This will stop the crash when being killed by a moving object:
In winecfg (terminal -> winecfg) click Add application on the Applications tab
Browse to Program Files\Steam\steamapps\(username)\garrysmod
select hl2.exe and click Open
With hl2.exe selected in the list change the windows version to Windows 98 (via the drop down box near the bottom is should be default say "Use global settings")
Hit Apply/OK, then try to launch Garry's mod again
