Garry's Mod

Garry's Mod 11 (Source 2007)
Garry's mod allows people to play around with valve's physics engine, to spawn props and construct weird devices. The game features several default levels for Gmod, and can be extended by other valve games, such as half-life (1 and 2), the episodes and for instance portal and TF2.
There are several game modes available, the default being sandbox, but possibilities include Zombie Survival (scary), Space build, where one builds a spacecraft to conquer planets, and Build to the Top (an external map) which is great fun in multiplayer.

What works

The game itself is pretty stable under normal gameplay and with a lot of mods as well. All graphics options work (apart from antialias).

What does not

- A lot of features are not working, such as the HUD, the background image in the main menu and also dropdowns from the GMOD context menu. - Switching between dxlevel 80 and 95 improved little: dx80 at least rendered the main menu background (but nothing else). - I had to create a custom qmenufix.cfg file as suggested here on appdb and use +exec qmenufix.cfg for the context menu to open correctly (otherwise the Q button opens it for a fraction of a second and then closes it. if Q is held down, then the menu starts flashing and the background view starts shifting) - There is a noticeable drop in FPS when activating Depth of Field, but I see most games ran under wine suffer from major slowdowns while using DoF.

Additional Comments

I'm rating it Bronze, it's still pretty much playable, in it's own slightly uncomfortable way. It also doesn't seem to be suffering from slowdowns as other Source games. Testing was done on an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 OC@ 4.22 GHz, 4GB DDR3 1800 MHz, 9800GTX OC2 on 2.6.30-r4 and with nvidia-drivers 185.18.14

How to run Garry's mod

If your garry's mod crashes before submitting a bug or commenting on here, here is what you should try:

This should fix any HUD issues you may have: (You may not be able to see certain effects like fire in the game with this)
In steam right click Garry's mod click Properties click "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..." Enter this:
-dxlevel 81
to run in windowed mode add: -window -h 864 -w 1152

This will stop the crash when being killed by a moving object:
In winecfg (terminal -> winecfg) click Add application on the Applications tab
Browse to Program Files\Steam\steamapps\(username)\garrysmod
select hl2.exe and click Open
With hl2.exe selected in the list change the windows version to Windows 98 (via the drop down box near the bottom is should be default say "Use global settings")
Hit Apply/OK, then try to launch Garry's mod again
