You need to launch steam.exe with the command -no-dwrite to see any text in the steam client. Once steam is running you will have to change the Steam Overlay to off. This is changed by choosing clicking steam - settings - in-game. You want to make sure Enable the Steam overlay while in-game is not checked.

While the unofficial patch 9.4 works perfectly well on Linux, the launcher that is created by the setup is broken.
Find the "VTM Bloodlines Unofficial Patch.desktop" file on your desktop, open it up with a text file and change the line:
-game\ Unofficial_Patch
to
-game Unofficial_Patch
You can also apply the latter one in the Steam startup options to track your playing time with the unofficial patch.
To force antialiasing in the game, run this in a terminal:
__GL_FSAA_MODE=4
export __GL_FSAA_MODE
wine /path/to/your/Vampire.exe -game Unofficial_Patch
