Upgrading Wine deletes necessary registry entries. This can be avoided by running wineboot after the upgrade, and before running SlingPlayer.
You can also disable this by running
echo disabled > ~/.wine/.update-timestamp
Bug #1260901 describes a bug in the Ubuntu PPA's version of Wine which causes the SlingPlayer to crash in user32. It is apparently caused by patches added by the PPA team.
Do not report this as a Wine bug.
Tested in Ubuntu 16.04 under Wine 3.0-rc3:
You should now have a working SlingPlayer!
If you experience an assertion failure while the SlingPlayer is loading, issue the following command and try again:
winetricks orm=backbuffer
