What works

SwiftTalker, along with the voice(s) you install, is very usable from a clean Wine setup. Most things work without a problem. Opening large documents (approx 800k).

What does not

  1. Audio skips at the start of a sentence if you are using a registered voice (set the Windows version in winecfg to Windows ME or earlier to fix this).
  2. Internal application error when opening Tools->Options (although the settings are persisted and the application does not crash).
  3. Reading text for a second time (bug 13093); the patch that broke this has been reverted post-rc1.

Workarounds

What was not tested

  1. Using multiple voices.
  2. Exporting audio to a file.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

After installing a Cepstral voice (e.g. Allison) and registering the voice, the audio will skip and stutter at the beginning of each sentence. To fix this:

  1. Run winecfg
  2. In the Applications tab, press the "Add application..." button
  3. Browse for swifttalker (c:\\program files\\cepstral\\bin\\swifttalker.exe)
  4. Select the swifttalker application in the list
  5. Set the "Windows Version" combo to a 9x version of Windows, e.g. "Windows 98"
NOTE: This is fixed in later versions of wine (e.g. 1.1.13), but pulseaudio can cause other issues - see the notes for version 5.1.
