What works

Installed a fresh Wine RPM and configured the default to run XP programs. Then unzipped the MPLAB 8.10 IDE so that it could be installed. Installation worked well except for not being able to find a few legacy programs (you can click to ignore the errors). MPLAB 8.10 appears to create projects and simulate projects okay. There is additional help in the Microchip forumns to help you install older versions but this install appeared to go fairly smoothly. Running the program, you need to load the program manager and then "Execute" the MPLAB main IDE located in Wine as "C:\Program Files\Microchip\MPLAB IDE\Core\MPLAB.exe" When MPLAB begins executing, you may find a few pop up windows saying: "Failed to initialize legacy language suite with CLSID" but you can click them to skip past them. Overall, it appears you can run, compile and simulate assembler projects in MPLAB v8.10

What does not

The editor does not look good in either Windows or in Linux. If you want to edit a program containing TABs, I would suggest using KDE and Kate/Kwrite which does a great job of aligning code and comments properly.

Additional Comments

If you need to test and simulate using MPLAB, it appears to work okay. Other Users have left comments that there are native linux applications for Microchip such as gpasm and pikdev so if you do wish to run a native program you have alternatives which can also program pic hardware too. Additionally, due to the increasing popularity of Linux, some 3rd party developers are also offering compilers, assemblers, tools that are built for Linux. This allows you to mix and match what you need if MPLAB does not quite fit your requirements.

HowTo / Notes

Note
The newest version is built on Netbeans (Java) so a Linux native version was released too. Now there's practically no reason to use these legacy versions in Wine. (Thanks, Microchip developers!)
