Selected Test Results

What works

  1. Installation, although requires 'winetricks mxml6 dotnet20'
  2. Launching and connecting to remote server via SQL authentication.
  3. Browsing of database through left-hand explorer tree
  4. basic queries, constructed and executed manually

What does not

  1. out of memory errors - double-clicking tables and databases occasionally generates out of memory errors (see screen shot)
  2. opening tables - right-clicking on table icons to "open table" (or browse table) produces error
  3. menu flakiness - right-click menus can be initiated by a right-click, but input coordinates are garbled using a right-click selection, causing new menu to be opened and wrong selection to be made.  Selections in right-click menu must be made using arrow-keys and Alt-key combos. ... Some menus did not appear until I rebooted my Linux box.

What was not tested

dunno - Couldn't get past above errors to test more thoroughly

Additional Comments

Barely bronze, may still be considered "garbage" rating. However, it seems that app is running much better now than previously rated... AFAIK, This is the only visual app that can be used to browse a Microsoft SQL server. It is very needed for me, so I can get at least work in a Linux environment.

HowTo / Notes

SSMSEE installation in wine 1.5.20

As a prerequisite you need to install .NET framework version 2.0. Follow the instructions on its appdb page.

The installer also requires MS XML 6.0. Wine's implementation is quite sufficient, but the installer fails to detect it when wine is in Windows XP mode (the default). Run winecfg and set Windows version to Windows 7.

After that, execute:

$ wine msiexec /i SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi
SSMSEE installation in wine 1.5.2 - 1.5.19

Wine versions prior to 1.5.20 had a bug in atl80 library, which prevented 'New query' button from working. To use native atl80 library run winecfg, switch to Libraries tab, select atl80 from the list, click Add and close winecfg by clicking OK. After that the button will work correctly.

Expanding database list fails with error message
This is Bug 19223. At this point you will not see any databases on the list, and the expand button near Databases folder will disappear. It is still possible to recover from this error by clicking Databases and clicking Refresh (or pressing F5), after which the list of databases should appear.
