HowTo / Notes

White Characters
To avoid white characters in the game set the parameter "UseGLSL" in the wine registry to value "disabled". So the game runs not so fast as with parameter set to "enabled" but you can play the game.

Anyone had issues with an invisible cursor and know how to fix it?
ROTWK -- MAC install
by STINO on Tuesday August 8th 2017, 16:16
dear all,

I am currently trying to install The rise of the witch king on my mac (2011 macbook pro with Yosemite 10.10.5). tried it with Wine and Wine bottler, but that did not recognise my installment of BFME 2, so i tried the Wine stable. But that does not recognise a disc. I do not have a disc but does anyone knows how to surpass this? Or anything else?
can't get past first screen

Help anyone,

I am trying to play BFME1 and 2 and both just won't get past the first screen. This must be a common error, I will answer any responses and I will do so diligently, Mark

I don't have that error. I can just play fine.
What "first screen" are you talking about? The splash screen? The menu screen?
Are you trying to play them using the DVD? If so, have you configured wine paths so the game can find the disk where it wants it?
Have you tried with a crack?

OK now this is a relevant place for this post as I have installed RotWK and it seemed to install fine, but like BFME1&2 it complains that ...
"Please make sure you have DirectX 9.0 or higher installed. Also verify that your video card meets the minimum requirements, and that you do not have hardware acceleration disabled in the display control panel.", and everything is set with winecfg and DirectX was installed (a few times)

and yes the first screen i was referring to is The splash screen.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's no need to install DirectX for running this game. Plain wine's DX implementation should suffice.
Have you disabled pixel and vertex shader support in your WINEPREFIX? Please check it in winecfg.
If they aren't disabled, than I think you should look to your graphics card drivers. What's your graphics card? What drivers are you using? Is direct rendering enabled (you can check it with glxinfo)?

Thanmks so much for the fast response, but No success yet.
I did what you asked in winecfg and I doubt there is a problem with my NVidia card as Ubuntu chose it's driver and it is a new HP Laptop with an NVidia GeForce GT 230M card. The glxinfo showed ...
" ack@Arawn:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation"

and I look froward to further troubleshooting...thanks

Maybe it's not the correct driver, or it has a conflict with the nouveau one, if you didn't remove it.
Please follow the advice from help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia to install the latest Nvidia binary drivers.
Regarding the shaders options, they must be both enabled.

OK If it is a NVidia driver issue I will be very happy, because that is fixable. I should mention that I installed a bleeding edge linux kernel 2.6.37 that seems to have no issues (maybe this is the first). I will try the stable kernel with Ubuntu (easy as it is still there and in grub) and if that doesn't work a removal of nvidia and install from download instead of Ubuntu's Additional Hardware choice. Nvidia is fully supported in Linux so it should be fixable if that's the problem.

Do you agree with my proposed next steps (and I will re-check the winecfg h/w accel and pixel shaders - thanks for clarifying) ,

thanks so much Mark

I'm no Nvidia expert (I've got only AMD/ATI cards at the moment), but I think that's what you should do.
Remember that every kernel you use needs its own nvidia kernel module.

PHEWWWEWW, I new I was asking for trouble when idecided to re-install the nvidia drivers ... wow 3 hours of troubles, but alas nvidia drivers are back in their full glory BUT no change, and i re-iterate same with BFME 1, 2 and RofWK. I tried CoD Black Ops, and Fallout 3 and they run with System Wine w no probs (I have PoL so can use any wine version). Hmmmmmm this seems very specific to LotR's. Perhaps it need an .ini or confige file before starting. I don't know where or how to make or edit it, (I already tried disabling Compiz-no better) ... What next??

Hi Mark,
1. Compiz is a big no-no for lots of 3D Wine games. Switch it off before making any attempts to solve problems with 3D.

2. Have you tried to run LOTRBFME in Wine Virtual Desktop (wincfg -> Graphics)? It's not full screen, but I've found this can help many games to run when videocard or monitor did not provide game a supported resolution, i.e. when game wanted to change video resolution and card/monitor/xorg replied it's not possible.
Regards
Hark

Have you removed the DirectX you installed previously? If not, I suggest to reinstall the games in a clean WINEPREFIX. You don't need it to run these games, nor any other additional software.

Hallelujah !!, awesome troubleshooting! As soon as you said virtual desktop I new it would likely work, and it did for both BFME2 and RofWK, but not yet for BFME1-though no big deal ... a little time in windows with knowing I will be back in Linux to finish off the series .... no prob. And for those who don't know where the .ini file is it is in wineprefix/BFME/drive_c/users/ack/Application Data/My Battle for Middle-earth Files/options.ini
Cool and I now have a much better understanding of wine.... THANKS

I've downloaded the patch so I can play the rise of the witchking online. When I run the file, the game starts loading, but it freezes in the start. It looks like the game won't run from the dvd. If I install the patch, the game will run but I won't be able to play online. Any ideas?
