What works

  • Almost everything works.

    Loading, saving, 2D mode editing, 3D mode editing, nodebuilding all work fine.

    It's very stable for long-term use, very rarely crashes.

    You could definitely use this as your only/primary mapping program. I have released several projects made exclusively with DB1 through Wine.

What does not

  • Things browser in 3D mode does not work at all.
  • You may have issues with windowed 3D mode depending on your graphics card and drivers. Use Fullscreen 3D mode. Fullscreen works on both my Intel laptop and ATI desktop and has historically worked on nVidia desktop but I have no hardware to test this with anymore.
  • Mouse cursor in 3D mode often disappears. Work around this by having the Things layer on (keyboard key t) and always having a Thing visible. Consider placing an otherwise-unused Thing about your maps for development, then remove these Things for distribution.
  • When saving a map as a new file for the first time, the filename field will be full of spaces. You'll need to highlight all these spaces and delete them before typing your filename.
  • The installer seems to make broken application entries. I had to edit ~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/Doom Builder/Doom Builder.desktop and change the Exec line as follows:

# Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/username/.wine" wine C:\\\\windows\\\\command\\\\start.exe /Unix /home/username/.wine/dosdevices/c:/users/Public/Start\\ Menu/Programs/Doom\\ Builder/Doom\\ Builder.lnk
Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/username/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\Doom Builder\Builder.exe"

  • Spinning around in 3D mode stops as the underlying mouse cursor hits the edges of the screen. Fix this by turning on MouseWarpOverride. Make a file called db.reg containing the following, then install it with wine regedit db.reg:

What was not tested

  • Pressing F8 to test maps, as these require working Windows sourceports which I have no interest in setting up.
I just keep a terminal window open, save my file in DB, then use the terminal to test my map in the native Linux sourceport.

Additional Comments

Install winetricks vb5run wsh57 Run the Doom Builder installer. Run winecfg, and set oleaut32.dll and olepro32.dll to Native then Builtin You should also update ZDBSP if you use it as your nodebuilder, DB1 ships with an outdated version: I did this on the 32-bit version of Wine running on 64-bit Linux. This info also being maintained at the following Doomworld thread:
