Topo!

What works

Installation was fine. Starts and runs quite well. No crashes. No overrides, but set Wine version to Win98 or 95 (later versions said this was helpful.) Editing, drawing routes, labels, symbols etc. Printing with various options and layouts, printing to cups-pdf. Saving modified files. Help screen works. Preference settings. There is no waypoint import from handheld GPS in this version, but manual input of GPS points works. Elevation profiling works. Find named location from Gazeteer works. Navigation overview panes, program menus, info bars all appear correctly.

At first I could not run maps directly from CD-ROM. App could not access the CD at all. Installing all data files to hard drive worked fine though. (This is not a big loss as running from CD is slow as molasses.) There are instructions for this in the Topo help files under 'Expert Install', but it's simple enough. Later I clued in to the fact that I could open Wine Configuration and map drive letter D: to the /cdrom/ folder of Linux which is where my CD is mounted. Topo could then immediately access other maps on CD, as long as the associated .tpo file was copied first to the app folder and opened.

What does not

Was not able to save maps to bitmaps such as jpg or tiff . Was not able to copy a bitmap into clipboard memory. It was possible to extract bitmaps from a pdf using Inkscape import, and do screen captures, but it would be more convenient to export bitmaps directly since this version of Topo has rather poor print scale options. ­
