What works

- Installing from the 2007 installer

(Then I set the 2 dll's to native, builtin according to instructions)

- All the editing options I've tried works, with the exception of adding data from files by open dialog. However, opening a picture in OpenOffice.org Write and then copying it and pasting it into PowerPoint 2007 works fine. So functionality is the same as in Windows with this work-around.

- Animation preview works fine (was previously reported as bugging out) as well as animations during presentations.

- WordArt and SmartArt works.

What does not

- Opening files to include in presentation (copy and paste works)

- Presenter view (does not detect 2 monitors, I guess it would be necessary to make overhead projector primary display or cloned for real presentations)

Workarounds

What was not tested

I only tested basic functionality, making a 2-slide presentation with a couple of animations and a theme. Also used WordArt and SmartArt.

Additional Comments

MSI nVidia GeForce GTS 250 with BenQ monitor and Optoma OH projector used to test presenting, which only works if displays are cloned. Dual displays not detected. I did not install any additional fonts except for the msttfonts package. Admin note: rating changed to conform to rating definitions.

HowTo / Notes

How to
(Updated 2015-04-20)

Follow the directions in the Microsoft Office (installer only) entry to install.

  • Do not change the Windows version to anything higher than XP or you will run into bug 29788.
  • In order to run Powerpoint 2007, you must set riched20.dll to (native) in winecfg. Note that you do not have to copy the dll from a Windows partition or use winetricks to install it. Office 2007 installs its own version of richedit in a private directory, but Wine will not use it unless you set the override.  Do not set the override globally unless you have Office installed in a separate wineprefix.

  • The default bullet characters are from Wingdings. If you want them to look the same as on Windows, install that font.

  • For mp3 sound to play out of the box, you must have 32 bit libmpg123 installed on your system and Wine must have been compiled with mp3 support. Not all distro packages provide this. The workaround for lack of winemp3.acm is to use the codec installed by WMP9,  l3codeca.acm. Copy l3codeca.acm to the wineprefix's /windows/system32 directory (or use winetricks to install WMP9), then create a symlink to it named winemp3.acm in the same directory.

Window Resizing Issues

Workarounds for bugs 23805 and 30587:

Solution 1: Run in an emulated virtual desktop. This is probably the easiest solution for most users.

Solution 2: Uncheck "Allow the window manager to control the windows" in winecfg. The downside is that Powerpoint will no longer show up in the taskbar.

Solution 3: (KDE users only) In System Settings, Window Behavior, do the following:

  1. Select Window Rules
  2. Click "New..." to create a new Window Rules
  3. Enter the description
  4. Window Class: Regular Expression: value *\b(winword.exe|excel.exe|powerpnt.exe)\b.*
  5. Check "Match whole window class"
  6. Check on tab "Size & Position"
  7. Check "Full screen": value Force, No
  8. Check "Ignore Requested Geometry": value Force, Yes
  9. Click Okay
(The downside of this solution is that the KDE panel will still be visible in Slide Show mode.)
