HowTo / Notes

TFN Number

In order to do any testing on this program, a "TFN" or Tax File Number is required. "123456782" passes validation, and can be used to test operation of the software.

It is not, however, a valid number at the tax office, so you cannot use it to test verification or lodgement.

HOWTO

Use the latest Wine:

Make sure you are running the latest version of Wine (currently 1.1.2). You can check your version with the command:

wine --version

If you do not have the latest version, follow the instructions at Wine Binary Downloads

Use winetricks:

You need to install msxml via winetricks. Run this command:

wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks && sh winetricks msxml4

Installing ETax:

Once you have the etax install file, run it with Wine:

wine etax2008_1.exe

Hopefully the entire process will complete successfully. If you encounter a problem, please file a bug or post a comment.

Gary,

1) Get the latest version of Wine (currently 1.1.2). For Ubuntu, instructions are at www.winehq.org/site/download-deb
2) Type this command in a terminal (the whole line):
wget kegel.com/wine/winetricks && sh winetricks msxml4

Hope this helps,
Hew

I followed the above steps on my Ubuntu Hardy (amd64). However, the verification process does not go through with the following messeages on console. Is there any other advice?

% wine etax2008.exe
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {76a64158-cb41-11d1-8b02-00600806d9b6} not registered
err:ole:create_server class {76a64158-cb41-11d1-8b02-00600806d9b6} not registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {76a64158-cb41-11d1-8b02-00600806d9b6} could be created for context 0x5

Thanks in advance,

This is the third time I've seen someone mention this error. Please (!) report a bug on this issue so the developers can work on a fix. Thanks in advance.

I've just reproduced this issue myself and filed a bug report for it as bug 14798 ( bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14798 ). Please confirm/vote/comment on this report if you can add additional information. Thanks again.

I'm not even getting to prefill stage.

Cannot proceed past "pre-filing" stage.
by zombiepig on Wednesday July 2nd 2008, 20:38
I can install and run etax 2008, but cannot proceed past the pre-filing stage. Regardless of if i click yes or no, nothing proceeds.
In the terminal wine outputs:
"err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {88d969c0-f192-11d4-a65f-0040963251e5} not registered
err:ole:create_server class {88d969c0-f192-11d4-a65f-0040963251e5} not registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {88d969c0-f192-11d4-a65f-0040963251e5} could be created for context 0x5
fixme:msxml:domelem_getAttributeNode "

I'm really interested to know other's experience with this software.

BTW - I think it's criminal that the ATO haven't released a cross-platform etax program yet. I'm disgusted that my tax dollars are going toward this release!

Exact same error output here (1.0.0).

Completely agree, and doubly annoyed because at least it worked in Wine properly last year.
RE: Cannot proceed past
by Hew McLachlan on Wednesday July 16th 2008, 0:35
Grab the development version of Wine (1.1.1) and run the command posted in the note above:

wget kegel.com/wine/winetricks && sh winetricks msxml4
RE: Cannot proceed past
by Michael Fraser on Wednesday July 16th 2008, 1:19
Right you are - I've done that and can get to the identity verification screen (right at the end) before it spits out the following:
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {76a64158-cb41-11d1-8b02-00600806d9b6} not registered
err:ole:create_server class {76a64158-cb41-11d1-8b02-00600806d9b6} not registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {76a64158-cb41-11d1-8b02-00600806d9b6} could be created for context 0x5

Nvm, there are Windows machines around, they just make me feel... dirty.

Please file a bug on the issue so the developers can work on a fix.

This doesn't help prefill to work - the app just dies. I've not tried to submit yet - but I wouldn't mind betting it dies on the verification stage as well. Prefill/submit probably rely on the same thing that Wine is having trouble with.

I must admit I've NEVER gotten etax to submit through Wine. I've always moved the data file to a windows machine at work.
submit did work previously
by Malcolm Gillies on Friday August 1st 2008, 19:14
I successfully completed and submitted my tax return using Wine in 2006 and 2007.

So it's frustrating that they managed to break it this year.
RE: submit did work previously
by Chris on Thursday October 30th 2008, 8:06
That "EConvertError" looks like a Delphi exception.... I'm betting the ATO had trouble finding anyone to code the updates that had actually used Delphi before. :) At least - that's the trouble we tend to have at my workplace as well.

E-tax is starting to look a bit old and crusty. Hopefully they're brave enough to rewrite in a (cross platform?) language that their developers know.
RE: submit did work previously
by JeffZ on Thursday October 30th 2008, 8:11
I'm not sure why they don't just go the SaaS route and do ETax as a web application.
