Everything works :
On Ubuntu x86_64, I ran into issues with gStreamer ia32 libs when using a 32 bits only wine. I used a manually built shared WoW64 setup. The prebuild wine 64 packages from PlayOnLinux also work great.
With a recent winetricks, install d3dx9 & devenum. The environment variables $WINE and $WINEPREFIX must be set properly before running winetricks. In a shared WoW64 setup, $WINE must point to the 32bits wine executable (i.e. /usr/local/bin/wine, not wine64).
wineboot -i # initialize an empty wine prefix
winetricks d3dx9 devenum
install the game and the 1.0 to 2.5 patch (the patch will install wmp9):
Install wmp10. When prompted about installing the Codec package for the 7+ Player, click Yes. After installing, you need to kill wine since wmplayer.exe does not quit.
Finally, install amstream and quartz (for sound/video playback):
winetricks amstream quartz
To launch the game, you need to run it from the installation folder:
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/DeepSilver/X3\ Reunion
Before launching the game, in the graphics settings, select "Use Alternative Video Playback". If not, the game will crash during startup.Â
What does not
Sound will not work if the first intro video is skipped by pressing escape. The game intro is actually composed of 3 parts: a first video, a quote from some famous person, and a second video. When the second video starts you can hit escape to skip it.
What was not tested
It may be required to install libmpeg123-0 If changing wine versions, quartz must be reinstalled: wionetricks --force quartz
