The installer complains about colour depth unless X is set to 8-bit. This can be worked around using the GK XP installer ( http://gkpatches.vogons.zetafleet.com/download.php?file=SetupGKXP103.exe ). Once installed the game will exit gracefully if bit depth is higher than 8. If depth is set to 8-bit, the game crashes on startup.
