What works

Installation.

Patching to single player v-1.2 with workaround (see additional comments).

Playing with dx9 executable.

No winetricks or windows libraries needed.

What does not

Playing with dx10 executable.

Mouse is completely unresponsive, including clicks. The game seems to run fine (at least you can get in game and run around with the keyboard), but it cannot be played properly for this reason (see additional comments).

Game complains about a missing "language.dat" file (probably not a wine bug. See additional comments)

Upon launching, game complains about underpowered cpu. This can simply be ignored.

Crashes occasionly.

Additional Comments

Language.dat: Upon initial installation the game complains about a missing file "language.dat", though the game will still launch successfully. However the same complaint prevents the 1.2 single player patch from installing. To solve this, create the file "language.dat" using Notepad in wine, containing the line "Language=English" (N.B. You must use notepad. Creating the file using gedit did not work for me. I don't know why.). Place this in the "Hellgate London/Data" folder. Now the patch should work. I do not think this is a wine bug. Apparently windows users have a similar problem. Mouse problems: The game can be played normally with the patch available here: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10318#c45 . This patch applies cleanly to wine 1.2.2. I could not get this patch to apply cleanly to later versions of wine, though admittedly I did not try all later versions.
