1.08a fixed a number of bugs.  As always, the game is free to play (demo version) every weekend on Saturdays for a chunk of hours - and forever on a LAN with no time limit.  So this report counts for the demo version too.

What works

Pretty much everything including pixel shaders, glow effects, online play, custom ships, etc.

The dedicated server works great too, including in text-only mode (console) using "wineconsole"

What does not

Movies and video resolution detection - it seems to only detect my entire dual screen desktop (3600x1200) as the only available resolution.

You have to add :

-windowed -width 1280 -height 1024 -noredists -nomovies

and override D3DX9_31.dll for it to run.

In steam, find it in your games list, right click on it and choose properties, then launch options.

Workarounds

What was not tested

The map editor.  Its a .NET DirectX9 managed app so it will most likely not work

Also tested the upcoming 1.10 version and it works great (and does not require steam).

  • Driver:

Additional Comments

You need to override D3DX9_31.dll - even though wine is supposed to provide D3DX, it obviously doesn't provide the same functionality since without the MS version of d3dx9, there are math and other errors.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
  1. Install via Steam storefront (demo or retail - remember, demo is free for lan play, and every saturday during Hyper Hour, so you can see how well this thing plays on your machine without having to (ever) buy it)
  2. Copy D3DX9_31.dll from elsewhere in your system / on the internet, or use cabextract on the D3D redists that ship in the /redists/ folder that it installs when it installs the game.
  3. Copy that file into the installation folder (alongside Hyperbol.exe).  Usualy this is in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/common/tshb/
  4. Add the following to its command line parameters by right clicking on it in steam and choosing "properties

-noredists -nomovies -windows -width 1280 -height 1024

(altering the width and height as appropariate)

Works fine with Compiz and without!  Plays fine on edges of the cube for me.

Note:  This would have gotten platinum if it wasnt for the D3DX9_31.DLL override.
