What works

Campaigns sort of work. They will randomly go black when loading but after a few retries of loading it it worked.

Skirmishes worked perfectly.

This game seems to work fine even  when compiz is running (most games do not play correctly if compiz is running)

What does not

Audio. I have serious problems with this.

Screen resolution. I have purchased a new monitor recently and the game still runs 1280x1024 instead of 1680x1050,

Game has bugs such as selecting infantry, it sometimes is unable to select infantry.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

The game can be installed out of the box, but you need to build a special version of Wine to run it, as described below. In addition, you will have to place winhttp.dll.so from this archive in the RA3 game directory

  • Download Wine 1.1.2, the cursor patches and the volume name patch
  • Unpack the Wine archive through the file manager or with 'tar -xvjf wine-1.1.2.tar.bz2'
  • Enter the Wine directory with 'cd wine-1.1.2'
  • Apply the cursor patch with 'patch -p1 < ../cursor-patches-1.1.2.patch'
  • Apply the volume name patch with 'patch -p1 < ../volume-names.diff'
  • Update wineserver with 'tools/make_requests'
  • Configure Wine with './configure --prefix=$HOME/wine-ra3', where you can choose another install path if you want to. If it displays
any errors and you are unable to fix them yourself, post the error message here, without the full console output
  • Build Wine with 'make'
  • Install with 'make install'
  • Delete the Wine source with 'cd ..; rm -rf wine-1.1.2'
  • Now you can run the game by substituting the 'wine' commandd with '$HOME/wine-ra3/bin/wine'
