HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Installation

The installation will be confused by the lack of a shell.dll file.  Merely creating an empty file will allow the installation to proceed.  However, I recommend you find a native shell.dll in the event that the game actually needs it for something.

touch ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/shell.dll

Running

The game will likely give an error about needed 256 colors.  This is a known issue in wine.  A workaround is available here.

Unfortunately, on my computer the game shows very odd colors and crashes horribly when I click on the image inside of the book.

Missing shell.dll
by Michael Mc Donnell on Sunday March 30th 2008, 10:47
You can coax the installer to run by adding an empty shell.dll in the windows/system32 folder:

mac@mac-desktop:~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32$ touch shell.dll

The installer will be able to install the game but not cannot install quicktime. Install quicktime by running the quicktime installer of the cd:

mac@mac-desktop:/media/MYST/install.qtw$ wine setup.exe

The game requires 256 colors to run. The game hangs on start up and I could not see the error messages.
