First installation step works with hack:
Starting myst.exe/myst.run works when a 8-bit graphic environment is running
(otherwise it will show an error message).
What does not
Second phase of installation (quicktime installation) hangs.
Game stops working after startup screens and looks ugly because of wrong
8-bit colormap in wine.

The installation will be confused by the lack of a shell.dll file. Merely creating an empty file will allow the installation to proceed. However, I recommend you find a native shell.dll in the event that the game actually needs it for something.
The game will likely give an error about needed 256 colors. This is a known issue in wine. A workaround is available here.
Unfortunately, on my computer the game shows very odd colors and crashes horribly when I click on the image inside of the book.
