• Starting the game. 

I did the following:

# I am compiling wine from git myself.
wine --version
# Output: wine-1.1.12-132-g1f62d85

# Create a new wine directory.
export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-siedler

# Install DirectX.
winetricks directx9

# Install the game.
wine DieSiedlerAufbruchDerKulturenDemo.exe

# Start the game.
cd ~/.wine-siedler/drive_c/Programme/Ubisoft/Die\ Siedler\ -\ Aufbruch\ der\ Kulturen\ -\ Demo/
wine bin/SADK.exe

# During the first start, a request for wine gecko installation appeared. I have let it install.

Additional Comments

I did another test, because other users asked me if I am still able to run the demo with the current wine version. As you can see, I am not able to run it anymore. The screen turns black for a short while and then the game exits.
