Additional Comments
Despite previous suggestions, consider NOT installing directx9 with winetricks (i.e. DO NOT run "winetricks directx9"). When I tried this, errors occured and the game refused to start. DO run "winetricks mfc42 directmusic". Thats it. Patchw32.dll, dsound, and l3codecx.ax have been needed previously? in some instances, but I did not seem to require them. You may still need them. As previously noted (Thanks to all), you should edit "rise2.ini". My file was in /.wine/drive_c/users/(username)/Application Data/Microsoft Games/Rise of Nations/rise2.ini Set the following: SkipIntroMovies=1 ForceLowCPUBackgroundVid=1 The second item may not already be present in the file, just add it at the end. You may consider allowing all resolutions, or changing some of the other items, but the two above seem to be all that is required for bug-free gaming. A bug occured which may be unique to me (XFCE 4.10 and Compiz). With compiz running, the sound would fail again if the game was run in full-screen mode. This happened with both alsa and oss4. If starting the game windowed (winecfg graphics set to emulate a virtual desktop), sound worked. Sound worked either way if compiz was not running.

You may have difficulty joining online multiplayer games. To resolve this, read this article from the FAQ.
Installation
The following DLLs are required to install and run Rise of Nations:
There is a cursor bug that can:
To work around this, edit the rise2.ini file (~/.wine/drive_c/users/{user}/Application Data/Microsoft Games/Thrones and Patriots Trial/rise2.ini) and set "ForceGDICursor=1".
Please report if you had to do this when submitting reports.

In the file ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/fpwin/Application Data/Microsoft Games/Rise of Nations/rise2.ini,
I changed O to 1 at the lin ForceLowCPUBackgroundVid=1 and now the mouse key single left-click is goin well.
By the way :
I Use debian lenny with whine 1.0.1-1
I downloaded Patchw32.dll from the given addresstéléchargé à l'adresse indiquée
I installed mfc42.dll using the winetricks script with "vb6run – MS Visual Basic 6 runtime" selected
To enable multiplayer games I installed some dlls using the winetricks with "directplay – MS DirectPlay (from DirectX 9 user redistributable)" selected
In the file ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/fpwin/Application Data/Microsoft Games/Rise of Nations/rise2.ini changed to 1 the SkipIntroMovies=1 parameter to skip the videos at the beginning
