Additional Comments

First off installation was a pain. The installer would run in wine, but would crash when it asked for the second cd. The workaround was to install it on a windows box or virtual machine and then copy everything over. I had to use a nocd crack to run it. Second off, sound works, but is laggy for me with Dopplar enabled. Third, graphics can be a bit tricky. On one machine, it ran almost perfectly with the opengl renderer out of the box. On my other machine, i had to do some steps to get opengl to work properly, but once i did, it was a big improvement over directx. steps i used: 1 use directx to set all graphics settings to low as possible. quit. 2 Change the system.cfg to use OpenGL as the renderer. 3 Start the game. BUT DONT CLICK OPTIONS. This will crash it. 4 start playing the game. This will initialize the renderer successfully. 5 pause and go to options to set graphics settings to whatever you like. 6 play 7 before quitting, set all graphics settings to as low as possible.

HowTo / Notes

Far Cry HOWTO

If you use the CD/DVD version run the setup program on the DVD or the first CD, and be sure it doesn't install Adobe Acrobat or DirectX.

Version 1.4 is required for multiplayer and contains many engine improvements. The version downloaded from Steam is also 1.40.

The 1.6 community patch is available and contains many bug fixes and improvements, particularly for multiplayer.

Optional OpenGL Renderer:

There is an OpenGL renderer that has most of the visual effects present in the Direct3D one, but should run faster. To enable it, change "r_Driver" from "Direct3D9" to "OpenGL" in the 'system.cfg' file.

The older OpenGL renderer in version 1.0/1.1 exhibits less artifacts, whereas 1.33 and above have a problematic water shader, and portions of far-off terrain render incorrectly. Regardless of the game version, set the shadow quality to 'medium' and the lighting quality to 'high'.
