Additional Comments

[1] To get the installer to work, I had to extract all files from the 5 CDs and run the extract setup.exe. When run directly from CD 1, the installer would infinitely ask for CD 2 (even after mounting CD 2).

[2] To progress past the first level, "Training", I had to set r_Driver="OpenGL" in ../Ubisoft/Crytex/Far Cry/system.cfg. The game would frequently crash to a Crytex engine crash screen when trying to load the second level, "Carrier". According to Ubisoft and Steam forums, this is a pretty common random error but was supposedly fixed in one of the official patches. The official patch did not fix this error for me, but r_Driver="OpenGL" did seem to fix the problem.

I also required a no-cd patch to run. Launching with CD 1 mounted would not work.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
Far Cry HOWTO

Installation:

If you use the CD/DVD version run the setup program on the DVD or the first CD, and be sure it doesn't install Adobe Acrobat or DirectX.

Patching:

Version 1.4 is required for multiplayer and contains many engine improvements. The version downloaded from Steam is also 1.40.

The 1.6 community patch is available and contains many bug fixes and improvements, particularly for multiplayer.

Optional OpenGL Renderer:

There is an OpenGL renderer that has most of the visual effects present in the Direct3D one, but should run faster. To enable it, change "r_Driver" from "Direct3D9" to "OpenGL" in the 'system.cfg' file.

The older OpenGL renderer in version 1.0/1.1 exhibits less artifacts, whereas 1.33 and above have a problematic water shader, and portions of far-off terrain render incorrectly. Regardless of the game version, set the shadow quality to 'medium' and the lighting quality to 'high'.
